His provocative advertising campaigns challenged conventional norms and targeted consumers directly verses the industry practice of targeting professionals and distributors. One of the most iconic ads from the 1980s came to be known as "the toilet in the road" and Kohler plans to reprise that ad in 2023 with breakthrough imagery and video featuring its award-winning Numi smart toilet. Global Market Events Several other 150th anniversary activations and events are planned across the globe over the next year at KOHLER Experience Centers, Kohler Signature Stores, and at various trade shows and events in 2023 including: Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, CONEXPO, Design Shanghai, Milan Design Week, Design Miami/, Kohler Wellness Retreats, and Kohler Food & Wine to name several. LONDON, Jan. 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Climate Connect Digital (CCD), a leading climate tech solutions provider, today published its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory for the fiscal year 2021-22 (April 2021 to March 2022), and announced the implementation of measures to offset them. The GHG inventory report covers emissions from global business activities for all its workforce, interns, and consultants, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Malaysia, and India. In line with the GHG Protocol, CCD is only eligible to account for Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. The company's Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity at its leased office locations were calculated to be just over 1 tonne of CO2 equivalent. The Scope 3 emissions, which include activities such as business travel, customer domain cloud server usage, transmission and distribution losses, and work-from-home, were calculated to be 141.179 tCO2e. It's worth noting that work-from-home emissions account for a substantial share under Scope 3. To offset these emissions, CCD has purchased quality offsets from a mix of renewable (VCU-1946) and nature-based projects (VCU-1477) registered with Verra. CCD understands that offsets are not a long-term solution but are an effective near-term step towards global emissions abatement goals. The company is committed to discovering new methods of reducing its carbon footprint and making best efforts to swiftly implement these. The emissions assessment and disclosure of offsets report has been prepared in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard methodology and the India GHG program. The emissions data has been verified by third-party auditors TUV India Pvt. Ltd (Read TUV report here). Commenting on the development from London, Nitin Tanwar, the company's Founder and Chief Ecosystem Officer, highlighted "Carbon accounting is the first step towards achieving net zero. The pandemic-induced work-from-home policies have changed our Scope 3 emissions mix significantly. As a provider of net zero services globally, we understand the intricacies of carbon data management and attach the highest importance to data integrity. Hence, we have chosen to verify our emissions through an established third-party auditor, despite being under no obligation to do so". PHNOM PENH, Cambodia and MANILA, Philippines , Jan. 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Fair Finance Asia (FFA) and NGO Forum on ADB (the Forum) have released a new report, "The Asian Development Bank's Energy Transition Mechanism: Emerging Social, Environmental and Rights-Based Considerations." The report raises critical questions and concerns about the Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM), which is being advanced by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as a market-oriented solution to accelerate the process of taking coal power off of national energy grids in specific Southeast, South and Central Asian countries and replacing it with other sources of power. FFA and NGO Forum on ADB (December 2022). The Asian Development Bank’s Energy Transition Mechanism: Emerging Social, Environmental and Rights-Based Considerations. FFA and the Forum developed this report to serve as a source of key information for groups monitoring how the ETM is being operationalized, as well as for communities living around, and working at, coal project sites selected for ETM implementation. As ADB advances plans to pilot the ETM in Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, and later in Kazakhstan and Vietnam, the report reiterates key risks and concerns being raised by civil society, community, and workers' organizations about the design and proposed implementation of the ETM. As explained by Mr. Rayyan Hassan, Executive Director, NGO Forum on ADB, "By keeping a close watch on the development of the ADB's ETM since it was announced in 2021, civil society groups in the region are becoming increasingly concerned that the ETM is flawed by design, seemingly leaving communities and workers at the very sites where the ETM will be proposed to be piloted in the dark, as the terms and conditions of early power plant retirement are negotiated under non-disclosure agreements, while turning a blind eye to the demands by broad social movements across the region for publicly accountable processes to phase out coal and other fossil fuel industries without delay." In particular, FFA and the Forum's new report highlights that, to date, the ETM: Does not require participating governments or companies to suspend the development of planned or under construction coal power projects and commit to phasing out coal power by 2040, as per the Paris Climate Agreement. The sheer number of coal power projects still expected to be added to national grids in the future (those that are now in the planning, pre-permitting, permitting, and construction phases) may overshadow the number slated for retirement. For example, while the ETM will be piloted in Indonesia at the 660MW Cirebon 1 site, an expansion unit of 1000MW (Cirebon 2) that is being developed by the same parent company, Cirebon Power, is set to begin commercial operations in the near future. Lacks clarity on the extent to which ADB's social and environmental safeguards will apply at pilot coal power project sites over the course of retirement (estimated by the ADB to take between 10-15 years), and whether surrounding communities will have access to filing grievances under the ADB's accountability mechanism. The ADB's ETM also lacks provisions to require pilot coal power project operators to adhere to internationally accepted human rights standards, such as binding United Nations treaties or the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Lacks channels for community groups, labor rights groups/local union bargaining units or other concerned civil society groups to meaningfully shape the terms of coal power project retirement (and hence their future), as negotiations for site specific retirements take place behind closed doors. In Indonesia, for example, plans to pilot the ETM are moving forward at the Cirebon 1 Coal Power Project, but are being discussed without the involvement of community groups and workers, who have not been fully informed or given the opportunity to provide their perspectives. Lacks clarity on the definition of clean energy options to be developed and parameters for repurposing projects. Loosely defining support for low carbon/clean energy options risks incentivizing the development of unsustainable resource-intensive options that have no place in a just energy transition, including waste-to-energy incinerators, facilities to burn woody biomass, projects that replace coal or are co-fired with hydrogen sourced from fossil gas, large hydropower dams, or carbon capture and storage infrastructure. Lacks transparency in relation to the actual terms and conditions for coal power project retirement. The ETM model does not rely on any payment caps to coal power project operators to accelerate retirement, nor does it require the terms of retirement to be disclosed. Compensation to coal operating companies therefore risks being paid at a highly inflated rate. "Just energy transition is not as simple as shifting from fossil fuels to less carbon-intensive sources of energy," said Ms. Bernadette Victorio, Program Lead, Fair Finance Asia. "The 'just' element must be reflected in the quality and pace at which the transition happens. Are the rights of communities, workers, and indigenous peoples respected and safeguarded? Are there broad, inclusive, democratic, and transparent consultative processes happening between key stakeholders? Are we ensuring that this whole process is not lopsidedly benefitting fossil fuel companies and their investors? These are only some of the very basic elements that need to be considered in the ADB's ETM rollout process. Our latest study details other key recommendations, and we share them during this critical juncture as the ETM's pilot project is being discussed." The report also provides a set of initial recommendations in cases where the ADB and ETM implementing partners, such as the WBG, have been involved in supporting the coal sector and industries. Accordingly, Mr. Hassan added, "Finally, after decades of bankrolling coal power projects in the region, the ADB committed to stop financing new coal power projects in 2021. Yet, the ADB consistently fails to meaningfully address the demands for justice and accountability raised by communities whose health and livelihoods have been ravaged by the ADB's investments in coal-related infrastructure, including in the Philippines, Pakistan and Mongolia. How many more years must they wait?" "There's a real opportunity for the ADB's ETM to support Asia's transition away from fossil fuels, but until the critical questions and gaps around socio-environmental safeguards are appropriately addressed, then this seems like another business-as-usual deal for fossil fuel companies and their investors," said Ms. Victorio. BEIJING, Jan. 20, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- China on Thursday released a white paper on its green development in the new era, elaborating on how the country has stayed firmly committed to green development, proactively participated in global climate governance and spearheaded international cooperation. The white paper is issued at a time when the global prospect for climate cooperation remains murky amid a lingering energy crisis, with developed countries including the US and major European nations - among the largest greenhouse gas emitters in history. Despite the downside, China is not only embarking on lockstep toward its two carbon targets respectively in 2030 and 2060, but also actively helping the developing countries tackle climate issues via South-South cooperation, the white paper showed. The slew of concrete moves is an embodiment of China's commitments to the world as a responsible major power. More importantly, it sends both a resounding and encouraging message to the world, in the midst of chaotic global schemes and widened divisions, which observers said is set to inject new impetus to the global climate fight. The white paper, titled "China's Green Development in the New Era," contains seven chapters, including China's commitment to green development path, green territorial configuration, industrial structure's further optimization, mechanism for green development and international cooperation outreach. According to the white paper, China, as the world's largest developing nation, has made remarkable progress in green development and great contribution in the global arena. As of the end of 2021, nearly 10,000 protected areas of various types and levels had been established, covering more than 17 percent of China's land area, bringing under effective protection 90 percent of its natural terrestrial ecosystem types and 74 percent of key state-protected wildlife species, the white paper said. From 2012 to 2021, 64 million hectares of trees were planted. Since 2000, China has led the world in greening the planet, contributing around one fourth of the newly added green areas in the world, it said. China is also making the fastest progress in air quality improvement. The average PM2.5 density of China's cities at prefecture level and above dropped from 46 micrograms per cubic meter in 2015 to 30 micrograms per cubic meter in 2021. A total of 87.5 percent of the days in 2021 have been good air quality days, according to the document. The proportion of clean energy sources in China's total energy consumption increased from 14.5 percent in 2012 to 25.5 percent by the end of 2021, while the proportion of coal decreased from 68.5 percent to 56 percent over the same period, the document said. By the end of 2021, the installed capacity of renewable energy was more than 1 billion kilowatts, accounting for 44.8 percent of China's overall installed capacity. The installed capacity of hydropower, wind power, and photovoltaic power each exceeded 300 million kilowatts, the highest in the world. China "fully demonstrates its strong sense of responsibility as a major power… and helps build a fair, rational and mutually beneficial global climate governance system," Zhao Chenxin, vice director of the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, said at a press briefing on Thursday. China has made the solemn pledges to achieve carbon emissions peak by 2030, and carbon neutrality by 2060. That target, if achieved on schedule, will mark the world's steepest reduction in carbon emission intensity and the shortest time in achieving the goal of going from carbon peak to carbon neutrality in global history, according to Zhao. China's firm resolve "The white paper underscores China's unswerving determination to honor its commitment. Given the three-fold global pressures of energy crunch, food crisis and economic meltdown, it is an affirmation that China will not retreat from its global responsibility in coping with climate challenges, instead it is ramping up the role," Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University, told the Global Times on Thursday. It is also released at a time when China is gradually walking out of the clouds of epidemic, and needs a momentum to realize high-quality growth, and green development is one of the potential drivers, Pan Jiahua, director of the institute of eco-civilization studies of the Beijing University of Technology, told the Global Times on Thursday. Observers said the stepped-up inputs by China will play a global exemplary role for both developing and developed worlds. Developing countries could avoid detours and have a readily available shortcut. "Developed countries with capitals, sources and aspiration could be encouraged to return back to the right track of development," Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations at the China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Thursday. China has shown consistency in its policy as it pursues a green path of development, which is borne out in the white paper. And such growth priority is further established by the tone-setting 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China report in October, which expounded China's overarching goal of modernization and identified the Chinese way of modernization as a new path of "harmonious co-existence between man and nature." The white paper doesn't disclose the amount of carbon emission reduction last year. But analysts expected that the amount being cut in 2022 was in parallel with the specific goals set before for each energy-intensive industry, such as steel, nonferrous metals and cement. In breakdown, many of China's detailed environmental indexes also championed the world. China has also supported an annual economic growth averaged at 6.6 percent with an annual energy consumption at 3 percent, according to the white paper. Compared with 2012, China's energy consumption per unit of GDP had dropped by 26.4 percent in 2021, making it one of the fastest countries in cutting energy intensity, according to the white paper. In global cooperation, China has also made historical contribution to the conclusion and implementation of the Paris agreement, actively participated in South-South cooperation on climate change, and advanced international cooperation on saving resources and protecting the eco-environment. And it is also working with other countries on promoting green development under the Belt and Road Initiative, Zhao said. Pan said China has played a very active role in promoting and leading the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. Whether at the UN climate talks or COP15 at which world leaders adopted the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, China has made undeniable contributions.
