HB11 Energy signs Australia-Spain bilateral laser fusion energy agreement, secures federal grant for $1.76M project

SYDNEY, April 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Australia's first laser fusion energy company HB11 Energy has signed a bilateral agreement with the University of Salamanca (USAL) and the Spanish Pulsed Lasers Centre (CLPU), to accelerate laser fusion energy development in Australia and Spain. Dr. Warren McKenzie, HB11 Energy Founder & MD The agreement will give HB11 Energy access to Spain's most powerful petawatt-class laser, operated by CLPU, which uses similar technology to the Livermore National Ignition Facility (NIF) where net energy gain was recently achieved. Australia's Ambassador to Spain Sophia McIntyre attended the signing of the agreement, due to the huge national potential for the bilateral partnership to put both countries at the forefront of the global race to clean, safe, reliable, and unlimited energy production using laser fusion. The Australian Government, through the Australian Research Council (ARC), has also awarded a $560,000 ARC Linkage grant towards a $1.76M project for the development of HB11 Energy's home-grown hydrogen-boron laser fusion, hosted by UNSW and involving collaborators at Macquarie University, University of Bordeaux and Spain's CLPU. Accessing CLPU facilities is particularly critical to HB11 Energy - and Australia as a whole - because Australia doesn't currently have the laser required for this work, whereas the laser owned by CLPU is a short-pulsed variety which is most advantageous for hydrogen-boron fusion. Conversely, CLPU is particularly interested in HB11 Energy and its Australian and global collaborative network, because it offers a best-practise approach to sourcing clean and affordable energy through laser fusion, and because of the capabilities it has built such as materials and laser target fabrication. The combination of Spain's expertise in nuclear science and ownership of ultra-high intensity laser facilities, with Australia's capability and personnel in laser science and technology, make for a strategically-matched international partnership that will progress science for fusion energy generation, says HB11 Energy. Dr. Warren McKenzie said: "The co-founder of HB11 Energy, Professor Heinrich Hora, first theorised about laser fusion in the late '70s and pioneered the field at UNSW Sydney. But the high-powered lasers needed to achieve the hydrogen-boron laser fusion did not exist back then like they do now. "Partnerships with organisations like the University of Salamanca and the CLPU are crucial for fusion energy research, like the research we will be conducting under the ARC Linkage grant, and beyond. "Australia needs to build its national laser fusion energy capability if we are going to lead the race towards fusion energy. This partnership is one of the many steps HB11 Energy is taking towards this goal, which will raise the profile of Australian research into laser fusion energy at a time when many governments around the world are planning major international laser fusion programs." Her Excellency Sophia McIntyre, Australia's Ambassador to Spain, said: "HB11 Energy's research with CPLU is groundbreaking and a great example of the growing science and technology ties between Australia and Spain. Collaborations like these place Australia in the vanguard of international research and help to build our scientific knowledge base and ensure we stay competitive." Dr. Maria Dolores Rodriguez Frias, director of CLPU, said: "Since the achievement of the laser laboratory NIF (US), Ignition is a reality in nuclear fusion. At CLPU we host the most powerful laser in Spain that counts among the three most powerful in the world at a high repetition rate. We are sure that this agreement will enhance our capabilities and strengthen our common interests fostering a green fusion energy in the next decades." The agreement signing was attended by:  Director of CLPU María Dolores Rodríguez  Scientific advisor at CLPU and long-time HB11 Energy collaborator Dr. Luca Volpe HB11 Energy's director and co-founder Jan Kirchoff HB11 Energy lead scientists Dimitri Batani and Sergey Pikuz Minister of Education of the Junta de Castilla y León, Rocío Lucas Rector of the University of Salamanca, Ricardo Rivero It follows HB11 Energy's recent establishment of a coalition of global laser technology heavyweights designed to kickstart Australia's laser industry and develop a petawatt-class laser facility locally. It also follows a CLPU experiment on proton boron fusion performed by a large collaboration of academics led by HB11 Energy, which is now one of very few laser experiments globally that has actually demonstrated a material number of fusion reactions. HB11 (www.hb11.energy) is creating the future of clean energy; safe, reliable, and unlimited electricity, generated by small nuclear fusion reactors that use abundant fuels with little or no harmful waste. It does this by using laser technology to fuse hydrogen and boron-11. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, while Boron-11 comprises some 80% of all Boron found in nature, is readily available, and is a stable, non-radioactive isotope. Unlike other nuclear and fossil-fuel burning plants, HB11 Energy's energy-generating process does not require large plants. Energy is released in the form of charged particles and can directly be converted to electricity without the need for steam turbines. This approach generates few neutrons through minority side reactions, which minimizes waste issues. There's no risk of a reactor meltdown and the energy generated can be directed straight to the grid.

LOW-CARBON COALITION PUBLISHES A GLOBAL STANDARD TO MEASURE AND REPORT CARBON EMISSIONS

Industry group seeks comments on its proposed protocol for a single low-carbon steel standard. WASHINGTON, April 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) today released a draft of The Steel Climate Standard, a global standard to measure and report steel carbon emissions. The standard focuses on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the global steel industry with a science-based glidepath to reduce emissions in line with the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement to achieve a 1.5º C scenario. The standard offers a single, technology-agnostic protocol that would apply to all steel producers equally on a global basis and would enable steel customers to know and compare the actual carbon emissions associated with steel products. In publishing its standard, the GSCC is inviting interested organizations to review The Steel Climate Standard and submit comments, which are due by May 17, 2023. The full text of the document and guidelines on submitting comments can be found at: https://globalsteelclimatecouncil.org "Steel companies and associations from around the world have come together to develop a standard that will enable our industry to reduce carbon emissions and encourage investments in lower emission technology as part of the global effort to decarbonize," said Greg Murphy, Executive Vice President, Nucor Corporation, and Chair of the GSCC. "Steel is integral to the functioning of global economies, including clean energy infrastructure. The Steel Climate Standard is a simple and understandable benchmark for reducing our industry greenhouse gas emissions and provides a transparent means for decision makers to make informed decisions," said Jeff Hansen, Vice President Environmental Sustainability, Steel Dynamics, and GSCC Board Member. GSCC is one of several groups and companies advocating for a global standard. Some in the United States and Europe are promoting a standard that features a "ferrous scrap usage sliding scale" – one standard for steel made from traditional production processes and another for steel made from circular processes. "Creating a dual standard would allow high-carbon emissions steel to be prioritized over lower-carbon steel. This is a form of greenwashing and serves to discourage innovation and allows high-carbon steelmakers to postpone making changes in their production process," said Phil Bell, President, Steel Manufacturers Association. GSCC's proposed standard is comprised of two main components: (1) product certification criteria that allows customers to know if the steel they are buying is on the glidepath to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement; and (2) a corporate-wide, science-based target-setting framework based on a 1.5-degree glidepath. The GSCC standard would measure all key GHG pollutants from Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Producers would have to report independent verification of their emissions and reduction targets. The GSCC standard's product intensity goals for the steel industry are based on the International Energy Agency's (IEA) carbon budget for the iron and steel sector, which is aligned with the 1.5°C scenario for net zero emissions by 2050. "Steel will also contribute to the transition to a greener economy with the production of electric vehicles, wind turbines, solar arrays and other clean technology products. The GSCC standard offers a clear future for steel in a decarbonized economy and aims to achieve the lowest overall emissions from the sector by 2050," said Franc Cardona, Head of Public Affairs, CELSA Group and GSCC Board member. About the Global Steel Climate CouncilGSCC is a non-profit organization created to lead an effort to reduce steel carbon emissions and encourage investments in lower emission technology as part of the global effort to decarbonize economies and societies. GSCC members are steel manufacturers, associations and other organizations in the steel supply chain that have a presence in 79 countries around the world.
