Agility: Logistics Execs Wary of 2024 Recession and Overreliance on China

Majority plan Africa expansion despite guarded outlook on emerging markets DUBAI, UAE, Feb. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Global logistics executives, still worried about recession, say they are battling higher costs, reducing dependence on sourcing from China, and planning to boost investment in Africa despite seeing emerging markets investment overall as somewhat riskier. Half of the 830 industry professionals surveyed for the 2024 Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index expect a global recession in the coming year – down from nearly 70% a year ago. More than 63% of respondents say their companies continue overhauling supply chains by spreading production to multiple locations or relocating it to home markets and nearby countries. China, the world's leading producer, stands to be most affected: 37.4% of industry professionals say they plan to move production/sourcing out of China or reduce investment there. "Shippers and carriers are struggling to minimize supply chain risk and find new growth opportunities. Inflation and recession risks have eased, but the industry is still living with the aftershocks of the COVID pandemic. At the same time, businesses are worried about geopolitics -- troubled trade relations between China and the U.S. and Europe, and the thicket of sanctions against a growing number of countries," says Agility Vice Chairman Tarek Sultan. The survey and Index are Agility's 15th annual snapshot of industry sentiment and ranking of the world's 50 leading emerging markets. The Index ranks countries for overall competitiveness based on their logistics strengths, business climates and digital readiness -- factors that make them attractive to logistics providers, freight forwarders, air and ocean carriers, distributors and investors. Shipping and logistics costs that soared during the COVID pandemic and its aftermath are still climbing but at a slower rate, the survey found. One way shippers expect to cope is by increasing use of digital freight forwarding from 37.8% today to 52% in five years. Meantime, the industry is gearing up for a surge in Africa investment. Nearly 62% of professionals say their companies are planning additional or first-time investments in Africa vs. only about 7% exiting or scaling back there. China and India, the world's two largest countries, held their spots at No. 1 and 2 in the overall rankings. UAE, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Vietnam, Mexico, and Thailand rounded out the top 10. No. 24 South Africa and 25 Kenya were highest among countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Three of the four countries offering the best emerging markets business conditions are situated in the Arabian Gulf: UAE (1), Saudi Arabia (3) and Qatar (4). Malaysia (2) and Jordan (5) both moved up in the business fundamentals rankings. China and India were tops for domestic and international logistics. In digital readiness, China jumped three spots to No. 1, followed by UAE, Malaysia and Qatar. India fell from the top spot a year ago to No. 5 this year. Outside of the top 10, many of the biggest swings in year-to-year rankings involved countries experiencing conflict, facing international economic sanctions, or suffering from chronic economic instability. Among them: Ukraine, Russia, Iran, Ethiopia, Argentina, Lebanon, Tunisia. 2024 Index Highlights SURVEY Supply chain restructuring – India, Europe and North America rank ahead of China as destinations executives expect to move production to in 2024 and onwards. China – 40% expect their businesses to be less reliant on China in five years. Leading factors in decisions to de-risk in China: difficulty of doing business; U.S.-China trade friction; a slowing economy; the harshness of China's COVID restrictions. Climate change – 66% say climate change is something they're planning for, or already affecting their businesses. Emerging markets – the largest percentage sees increased risk/decreased rewards in emerging markets. India – many see India growing in importance as a producer and market, but cite inadequate infrastructure and corruption as the biggest obstacles there. COUNTRY RANKINGS In the Middle East and North Africa, overall rankings were: UAE (3); Saudi Arabia (6); Qatar (7); Turkey (11); Jordan (17); Oman (15); Bahrain (16); Egypt (20); Kuwait (21); Morocco (22); Tunisia (37); Lebanon (38); Iran (40); Algeria (42); Libya (50). Rankings in Sub-Saharan Africa: South Africa (24); Kenya (25); Ghana (31); Nigeria (36); Tanzania (41); Uganda (43); Ethiopia (45); Mozambique (46); Angola (47). Index rankings in Asia: China (1); India (2); Malaysia (4); Indonesia (5); Vietnam (8); Thailand (10); Philippines (18); Kazakhstan (23); Sri Lanka (26); Pakistan (29); Cambodia (32); Bangladesh (33); Myanmar (49). Rankings for Latin America: Mexico (9); Chile (12); Brazil (14); Uruguay (19); Peru (28); Colombia (27); Argentina (30); Ecuador (35); Paraguay (39); Bolivia (44); Venezuela (48). In Europe: Russia (13); Ukraine (34). Transport Intelligence (Ti), a leading analysis and research firm for the logistics industry, has compiled the Index since it was launched in 2009. John Manners-Bell, Chief Executive of Ti, said: "Supply chain managers are still coming to terms with the political and economic instability characterising the post-COVID global economy. Geopolitical relationships are changing rapidly, and this is having a major impact on international trade and risk profiles. Businesses need to be alive to the opportunities and threats that exist in emerging markets and use data, such as that the Agility Emerging Market Logistics Index, to inform agile decision-making." 2024 Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index: agility.com/2024index About Agility Agility is a global leader in supply chain services, infrastructure, and innovation with 45,000+ employees across six continents. Monotype's Type Trends Report Reveals Generative AI, Rave Music, and Classic Serifs Influencing 2024 Brand Design

WOBURN, Mass., Feb. 9, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Monotype, a global leader in type and technology, has released its highly anticipated fourth annual Type Trends Report. The report, curated by Monotype Creative Type Designer Jordan Bell and Creative Type Director Damien Collot, identifies ten trends in type and brand design set to shape the wider cultural zeitgeist of 2024—including AI-inspired surrealism, '90s and Y2K nostalgia for raves and grunge, and the comeback of classic serif fonts. In addition to the identified trends, the report reveals the enduring creative inspiration that type and brand designers find in nostalgia for music subcultures—a thread that runs throughout this year's trends and is explored through the innovative art direction of the report itself.  Monotype's Type Trends Report 2024 See the type in action here. Jordan Bell, Type Designer at Monotype commented, "In this, our fourth Annual Type Trends Report, we found a movement away from the trend of cuddly, squishy, empathetic fonts that many brands and creatives embraced after the alienation and stress of the pandemic. This year, in a time that can feel nostalgic for the digital simplicity of the pre-smartphone, pre-AI world, we see designers returning to the heritage and comfort of more traditional serif fonts, and also finding new creative inspiration in '90s and early '00s scenes like grunge, jungle, and early rave culture." The ten trends are reimagined by Monotype as worn vinyl LP covers, connecting each type trend to a specific musical genre—from jazz to reggae, '90s hip hop to punk, and UK rave music. The imaginary vinyl cover art was created using Midjourney AI, a creative process that itself reflects the tension between nostalgia for the old analogue world and our immersion in a new AI-infused digital age.  Ibrahim Gharib, Designer at Monotype, who led the art direction of the report, said, "Producing this report, we wanted to shine a light on the powerful influence of music on type—and at the same time mirror the way that designers and brands are using AI to unlock surprising new ways to be creative. The result is an imaginary but deeply nostalgic visual dreamscape, where modern design trends are connected to the cultural experiences of the past while simultaneously being reshaped by the concerns, hopes, and creative tools of 2024."  Monotype's report references examples of creative work from around the world, unpacking ten emerging trends that demonstrate a curious duality at the heart of our rapidly-changing world—from the rise of new technology, like generative AI, inspiring surrealist fonts; and type that challenges expected design norms such as legibility; to the counter resurgence of serif fonts that convey comfort, nostalgia, and heritage values in a time of unprecedented change.  Among the trends included in this year's report are:  Perhaps in response to the somewhat chaotic tide of AI-generated art, Everythingallofthetime sees designers rise to the challenge to use all of the typefaces, textures, and technology available to them in a single design. The name of this trend was inspired by comedian and musician Bo Burnham's tune, "Welcome to the Internet." This trend is notable for its maximalist patterns and surrealist themes—from randomly-generated alternate glyphs to shapeshifting fonts. AI learned design from humans — are we now learning design from AI?  From Barbie to Saltburn to Mean Girls 2, nostalgia is officially back with Whatever, a trend that encompasses a broad spectrum of styles from nihilistic grunge to colorful pixel play. Reminiscent of '90s rave fliers with big bold fonts, digital gradients, and drop shadows, this resurgence of retro typefaces capitalizes on a broader wave of Y2K nostalgia currently infusing music, fashion, film, and design.  In what could be seen as a reflection of global cultural and societal issues, from sustainability and climate change to social justice reform, designers are sparking aesthetic disobedience with De-form. De-form is a trend that marks a bold departure from "blanding" and the "clean aesthetic." Typefaces in this trend are distorted, often arranged so tightly that each letter competes for space and attention, challenging design conventions such as legibility. Defined by type that surprises the viewer with bold detail, Quirk is an emerging trend that finds a balance between a brand's desire to be different and the customer's comfort. Subtle quirks provide a little something to catch the eye, while still being firmly rooted in the familiar forms of solid, stable, sans serifs. The fluid, loopy nature of music captured within a customized font for a personalized song platform is just one example of Quirk's rise in 2024.  After several decades of brands transitioning to minimalist sans-serifs, we are now seeing the Return of the Serif. Against the backdrop of ever more complex surroundings and hyper-speed change, brands are returning to the comforts of classic tradition with typefaces that pay homage to their legacy while simultaneously looking to the future. Damien Collot, Creative Type Director at Monotype, commented, "Type is both a reflection and a catalyst of the cultural conversations that shape our everyday lives. In this, our fourth annual Type Trends report, we wanted to explore what type tells us about culture and the world in 2024. Against a backdrop of break-neck speed innovation and social change, we found seemingly opposing concepts being combined by designers, influenced by both future possibilities and nostalgia for the past, perhaps heralding a new, more contradictory era of creativity."  To read the full 2024 Type Trends Report, visit: https://www.monotype.com/type-trends-2024. How Can Decun Change Ethereum's L2: CoinEx Research Position

HONG KONG, Feb. 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Ahead of the mainnet activation of Cancun-Deneb (or Dencun), the most anticipated Ethereum upgrade of 2024, CoinEx describes its major elements. Proto-Danksharding, blobs, KZG: What's under hood of Dencun CoinEx specialists described Dencun as a major Ethereum (ETH) upgrade set to include five EIPs, among which EIP-4844 receives the most market attention. Its main purpose is to solve Ethereum's scalability problem and help reduce transaction costs for Ethereum layer-2 solutions, which directly benefits related ecosystems such as L2. In addition to the core EIP-4844, other improvement proposals include EIP-1153, EIP-4788, EIP-5656 and EIP-6780. The core novelty of Dencun, according to the latest report of CoinEx Research, will be so-called Proto-Danksharding, known as EIP-4844. It is set to reconsider the way Ethereum (ETH) stores the information required for the interaction between L1 mainnet and L2 networks. Ethereum (ETH) will receive a new data structure known as a blob dedicated to storing transaction data submitted from layer 2 to layer 1. As explained by CoinEx Research, in order to ensure the security and immutability of the new mechanism, Ethereum (ETH) will introduce the KZG Polynomial Commitment. Simply put, the activation of the new scheme will make L2 transactions faster and cheaper thanks to an optimized data logistics scheme. Potential effects of minor EIPs: CoinEx Verdict Besides EIP-4844, Dencun is expected to bring some other EIPs to Ethereum. For instance, EIP-1153, or Transient Storage Opcodes, will reduce unnecessary gas overhead for on-chain users or developers. EIP-4788, or Beacon Chain Block Root Submission, will bring the EVM-compatibility of L2 blockchains to the next level.
