Acer shares its net-zero strategy and signs corporate power purchase agreement TAIPEI, April 19, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Acer Inc. (TWSE: 2353) has pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and announced its net-zero strategy outlining nine directions under three major pillars of operations, products and services, and value chain. The nine strategies are: minimize energy consumption; use renewable energy; carbon removal and offsets; low-carbon products and services; choose sustainable materials; smart, circular and renewable applications; commit to carbon reduction targets, green manufacturing and logistics; and realize low carbon and circular economies to reduce the overall carbon footprint. Acer also signed a long-term corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) on renewable energy with Energy Helper TCC Corp., a subsidiary of Taiwan Cement Corp., which will provide about 10 million kilowatt-hours of wind power annually, to gradually realize the goal of sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2035 and move toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 for the Acer Group. "In addition to Acer's commitment to reach net-zero," said Jason Chen, Chairman and CEO, Acer Inc., "we have gained global recognition for our transparent ESG reporting and actions with our Earthion sustainability mission. Next, our goals are to achieve carbon neutrality among our global operations, design low-carbon and smart products, and work with our supply-chain partners to bring sustainable changes, and ultimately move forward on our path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050." Acer's Net Zero Strategy Since 2015, Acer has sourced more than 40% renewable electricity for eight consecutive years, achieved through building its own solar power generation sites and purchasing renewable energy certificates. Acer owns the largest solar power plant in northern Taiwan and has installed solar power generation equipment in the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. In 2022, Acer signed a long-term renewable energy CPPA with Taiwan Cement Corp. to reach the phased goals of using 60% renewable electricity by 2025, sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2035, and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In addition, aligned with the 1.5°C pathway, Acer expects to achieve the goal of cutting emissions by 50% compared to 2019 [1] by 2030. Since 2020, Acer has integrated the climate-related financial disclosure framework (TCFD) into its reporting to better manage climate-related risks and opportunities, strengthen the company's climate resilience, and through an internal carbon price mechanism, encourage various departments and global operations to actively take carbon reduction actions, develop energy-efficient products and services, and evaluate solutions such as introducing natural solutions and carbon negative technologies. Low Eco-friendly Products that Respond to SDGs The international trends in applying carbon taxes on trade, manufacturing emissions, and such, mean that products' carbon footprints may directly impact on their cost and competitiveness. Taking into consideration the concept of a circular economy, the life cycle of products, and innovations to reduce the environmental impacts, Acer seeks to strike a balance between product management and environmental performance. In 2022, a carbon footprint tool was introduced to complete the carbon report of Acer's commercial business products and ChromeOS devices. A new Modern Standby power management mode was developed to reduce energy consumption of notebook computers by 39% and of desktop computers by 35%, compared with the base year of 2016. At the same time, Acer's eco-friendly Vero product line continued to increase the use of eco-friendly materials, such as post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and ocean-bound plastic (OBP), extending this use across other product lines to reduce carbon footprint, implementing tangible actions toward the goal of a circular economy. Acer's subsidiaries have also launched various innovative products that incorporate the concept of sustainability, including: integrated smart parking meter with electric vehicle charging station that respond to the global net-zero policy of transportation electrification; the eKinekt bike desk that converts pedaling power to electricity to create a sustainable and healthy lifestyle; electric vehicles with the Xplova e-scooter and "ebii" ebike; enabling zero-carbon emission to be practiced in daily life and responding to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including SDG 3 for good health and well-being, SDG 11 for sustainable cities and communities, and SDG 13 Climate Action. Work with Supply Chain Partners to Speed Up the Net-zero Goal As one of the world's top ICT companies, Acer seeks to amplify the positive impacts on the environment through united actions. Starting from its Project Humanity initiative in 2017, employees around the world were united to take eco-friendly actions, laying the foundation for the company to implement its net-zero carbon emission strategy. In 2021, Acer launched its Earthion program to extend the concept of carbon reduction to like-minded people and began working closely with suppliers and partners to take actions focusing on energy, product design, packaging design, production, logistics, and recycling to reduce the proportion of plastic materials used throughout the production process. Acer aims to optimize communication with its supply chain partners through annual ESG communication meetings, ad hoc business meetings, CDP supplier training, and carbon management-related training courses. In addition, Acer's ESG scorecard management mechanism incorporates suppliers' greenhouse gas inventory, carbon management, carbon reduction actions, and renewable electricity usage into its procurement evaluation. This encourages suppliers to commit to net-zero carbon emissions, set reduction goals such as RE100 or SBT, and work toward the goal of net zero by 2050. NEW YORK, April 19, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, YPO, the global leadership community of more than 34,000 chief executives in 150 countries, announced that Greg Murray, Co-Founder and CEO of KOKO Networks, is the recipient of the organization's 2023 Global Impact Award. KOKO Networks is a Kenyan-based climate-tech company tackling deforestation and carbon emissions caused by using charcoal as cooking fuel in urban homes. The YPO Global Impact Award is YPO's highest honor to members that recognizes their impact outside of YPO, celebrating CEO impact that is both sustainable and scalable. "Greg and KOKO Networks are paving the way with their innovative approach to combating deforestation and improving the health of Kenyans, finding technology-based solutions that benefit not only the environment but also millions of consumers," says Thayer Smith, CEO of YPO. "He is an inspiration within our YPO community and beyond." According to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), charcoal, the dominant fuel used for cooking in urban Africa, is the main driver of deforestation on the continent. Indoor air pollution from burning charcoal causes hundreds of thousands of deaths each year, primarily children under 5 years old, from pneumonia and acute respiratory infections. This pollution is the equivalent of breathing in four packs of cigarettes a day. Murray and his co-founders, Sagun Saxena, Micael da Costa and Nicholas Stokes, set out to tackle this problem through designing and launching a new technology-driven industry that could rapidly transition countries away from charcoal dependence. By providing consumers with a superior solution that is significantly less costly than charcoal, KOKO is scaling rapidly, with over 10,000 new households switching to its clean fuel and carbon platform each week. KOKO, which employs 1,800 staff across East Africa, India and the U.K., manages a network of over 2,000 high-tech KOKO Fuel ATMs located in corner shops in low-income neighborhoods, enabling customers to conveniently and safely access low-cost clean fuel within a short walk of home. KOKO Fuel is now used in the homes of more than 3.5 million Kenyans across six cities, reducing over 4 million tons of carbon emissions each year and protecting family health from the diseases caused by indoor air pollution. Carbon revenues are shared with households via lowering the cost of KOKO Fuel, making it affordable for even the poorest. KOKO Fuel is sustainable bioethanol produced in East Africa from molasses, a byproduct of sugar production, delivering increased incomes to farming communities.Murray says, "We are honored to receive YPO's 2023 Global Impact Award. Ten years ago, we developed an ambitious plan to harness technology, infrastructure and carbon markets to drive energy transition and forest protection at a scale and pace that is meaningful. We are just getting started – there are over a billion people across 60 low-income tropical forest nations who are charcoal dependent and need our networks. We have about 15 years to turn the tide on tropical deforestation, and it simply can't be done without tackling the main commodity demand drivers and giving the forests the space to regenerate. KOKO is a scalable new tool in that fight." Murray was selected from honorees representing YPO's regions around the world. SINGAPORE, April 17, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Apical, through its renewable energy subsidiary Bio-Oils located in Huelva, Spain, has established a joint venture with Cepsa to produce second generation (2G) biofuels by constructing the largest plant in southern Europe. The joint venture will entail an investment of up to €1 billion, one of the largest private investments in the history of the southern Spanish region of Andalusia. The alliance marks Apical's entry to the sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) market and a key milestone in RGE's strategy to produce a range of fuels to decarbonise aviation, maritime and land transportation. Apical, a leading vegetable oil processor, is a member of the Singapore-headquartered RGE group of companies. The new plant, which is scheduled to begin operation in H1 2026, can produce up to 500,000 tons of SAF and/or renewable diesel annually, enabling the reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent, as compared to traditional fuels. SAF is often viewed as a tool to a zero-emissions future. However, the key global challenge to the production of SAF is access to feedstock (renewable waste and residue raw materials). As a large global integrated processor of vegetable oils, Apical is able to efficiently and sustainably extract waste and residue from its supply chain and its processes in a transparent and traceable manner. Through the joint venture, the plant will secure the majority of its feedstock supply from Apical's agricultural waste and residue through a global, long-term agreement. Cepsa will contribute its technical expertise and experience in the development of large industrial projects and fuel production; and knowledge of the European market and the decarbonisation goals of its customers in the transport sector. The facility will be located at Cepsa's La Rábida Energy Park in the Spanish province of Huelva. Dato' Yeo How, President of Apical, said: "Apical's ample supply of high quality second generation feedstock is key to ensuring that the new joint venture delivers on our shared vision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across air, sea and land transport. The wider use of SAF and renewable diesel provides significant benefits on a global scale, both in terms of mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting sustainable economic growth. Apical, through Bio-Oils, will ensure the supply of raw materials and contribute our own expertise in biofuels production." The new facility will feature the latest technology for the production of second generation biofuels. Designed as a digital native plant, the new operation incorporates state-of-the-art technology including the latest industry advances in artificial intelligence, internet of things (IoT) and data analysis to maximise process efficiency, and ensure the highest standards of safety and environmental protection. By leveraging innovation, Apical is accelerating its sustainable operations in line with Apical2030's Pillar 3 (Green Innovation) of its strategic sustainability roadmap. Pratheepan Karunagaran, Executive Director, Apical, said: "Aviation emissions account for 2-3 percent of global energy-related CO2 emissions and are expected to grow by 300-700 percent by 2050[1]. To reduce the direct carbon emissions of flying, SAF can be an immediate solution. A next-generation low-carbon fuel produced from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, it works seamlessly with existing aircraft engines and fuelling infrastructure. As the availability of waste and residue grows in tandem with the expansion of Apical's global footprint and capacities, we are able to create value-added partnerships for our waste stream in various parts of the world, especially in Asia." With regard to the development of the SAF industry in Asia, Pratheepan commented: "SAF in Asia has much potential for growth and development. The good news is: as more countries begin to recognise the importance of sustainable practices and environmental responsibility, there is likely a greater focus on promoting the adoption of SAF throughout the aviation industry," he added. The new joint venture was announced at La Rábida Energy Park with the participation of Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, President of the Regional Government of Andalusia; Maarten Wetselaar, Cepsa CEO (fourth from the left); Oscar Garcia, Bio-Oils CEO (second from the right); Dato’ Yeo How, President, Apical (fourth from the right); Pratheepan Karunagaran, Executive Director, Apical (third from the left); and Lamberto Gaggiotti, Head, Green Energy, Apical (first from the left). Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, highlighted in his speech: "Cepsa has been investing in Huelva and Andalusia for almost 60 years and has been an active part and main player in the progress experienced in our land. Cepsa has made an outstanding contribution to our progress and to the creation of employment, with almost 8,000 direct and indirect jobs. Big bets like Cepsa's confirm that we are on the right track." Maarten Wetselaar noted: "This alliance is a decisive step in our strategy to lead biofuels in Spain and Portugal and positions Andalusia as a European benchmark in sustainable energy production and circular economy. Second-generation biofuels are an immediate solution to support our customers' energy as they can be used in conventional engines, while enabling local development and increased energy autonomy in Europe." Oscar Garcia said: "Cepsa has been Bio-Oils' largest customer for many years. We share many operational advantages, such as the proximity and interconnection of our facilities and the use of the Reina Sofía berth for the charge and discharge of our products. Developed countries first need to follow through on the 100 billion dollar pledge they made to developing countries over a decade ago." "On top of that, the world needs to triple the amount of money by 2030 that is available for clean tech investment, adaptation finance and a just energy transition in emerging and developing countries. The fact is that climate finance is nowhere near available, affordable or accessible enough. We need fundamental reform of international financial institutions to achieve both climate and development goals." The COP28 President-Designate emphasized that the world was at risk of missing the mark on the Paris Agreement and overshooting climate targets. He stressed the need for an accelerated, just, and pragmatic energy transition. "We need to triple renewable capacity by 2030 and increase it 6-fold by 2040. We need smart government regulation to incentivize and commercialize viable alternatives for high-emitting sectors, like hydrogen and carbon capture technologies. And we need to continue to make the energies the world relies on today as low carbon intensive as possible, ensuring energy security is maintained during a well-managed transition. "Let's remember that emissions are the enemy, not energy. We need maximum energy, minimum emissions to ensure sustainable economic and social development." Adding that climate finance was an impediment to delivering action, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, who traveled to Japan from the World Bank's Spring Meetings in Washington D.C, stressed the need to reform international financial institutions and deliver on the $100 billion promised to developing countries. "The global south is still waiting for developed economies to make good on the 100-billion-dollar climate finance pledge made over a decade ago. And they are rightly calling for fundamental reforms of IFIs and MDBs. The COP28 President-Designate underscored the need for solidarity and unity in driving climate action, adding, "The transformational progress we need will only happen through complete inclusivity. No one can be on the side-lines. COP 28 must unite North and South, Governments and Industry, Science and Civil Society. I am counting on you to pursue the policies and take the actions needed to deliver the climate deal of the decade. Let's keep 1.5 alive. Let's ensure sustainable economic and social growth for all our people. And let's keep our eye on the prize… and that is holding back emissions, not progress." Dr. Al Jaber also met in Tokyo this week with Japan's Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yoshimasa Hayashi, for discussions on climate action. During the meetings, Dr. Al Jaber highlighted the importance of building on the strategic partnership between the UAE and Japan, and the two nations' bilateral commitment to accelerating the energy transition, ahead of COP28. The COP28 President-Designate recognized the key role that Japan has played in advancing climate action, through the establishment of the Kyoto Protocol, the first international treaty to set legally binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions, in 1997. "The Kyoto Protocol represents a historic landmark in the international fight against climate change – the awakening of the need for global climate action," Dr. Al Jaber said. "Now, COP28 in the UAE must deliver that action. The Global Stocktake will show just how far off course we are on global progress, and we will need to respond with a plan of action that is inclusive, ambitious and bold. We need a COP of Action and a COP for All." For all media enquiries and requests for interviews, please contact comms@climateenvoy.gov.ae.
