The Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University (AADTHU) held a major academic conference in Milan, Italy, on Nov. 15-16, under the theme "Future Context: A New Paradigm for Art and Design Education."

The Tsinghua International Conference on Art & Design Education (ICADE) was hosted by Tsinghua University and organized by AADTHU, the Tsinghua University Milan Institute of Art & Design and the China-Italy Design Innovation Hub.

More than 100 university leaders, professors, scholars and industry representatives from art and design institutions across China, Italy, Australia,  Austria, Belgium, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries gathered in Milan for the event.

Over two days, the conference featured eight keynote speeches, two roundtable discussions with university leaders, four thematic forums, two parallel seminars, and a series of international art and design workshops. The program facilitated in-depth cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue as participants shared their experiences and explored how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping artistic expression and educational paradigms.

At the opening ceremony, Qin Chuan, secretary of the CPC Tsinghua Academy of Arts & Design committee, noted that the five years since the conference's inception have coincided with dramatic global changes, including revolutionary breakthroughs in AI.

"On such an international platform, we firmly believe that regardless of how the global landscape and emerging technologies may change, we remain steadfast companions in art and design education, always seeking to enhance communication and deepen cooperation — this is our shared aspiration," he stated. "We are also profoundly aware that art and design serve as a universal language capable of connecting the world amid these uncertain times."

He said this year's ICADE focuses on establishing a collaborative framework for the future, reflecting the deep integration of technology and culture. Discussions centered on redefining creative logic in the AI age, restructuring educational systems within interdisciplinary contexts and discovering possibilities for symbiotic coexistence amid cultural diversity.

"We look forward to working with all participants at this conference to collectively envision the future of art and design education, and to establish sustainable cooperation frameworks that face the world and embrace tomorrow," he said.

The opening ceremony also featured speeches by Anna Barbara, president of POLI.design, a consortium of Politecnico di Milano; Dalia Gallico, executive vice president of the World Olymp'Arts Council; Lorenzo Imbesi, president of the Cumulus Association; and Wu Jian, head of the Haier Innovation Design Center. Wu Qiong, dean of the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, sent a congratulatory letter. The ceremony was hosted by Shi Danqing, associate dean of AADTHU.

"Design as a discipline stands at a crucial turning point, where technological advancements, pressing social issues and evolving business models are collectively reshaping its boundaries and core," Wu's letter said. "May this conference serve as a catalyst for in-depth dialogue on how to reconstruct educational models and integrate art with technology within new contexts, thereby inspiring renewed vitality."

On the first day, keynote speeches and a leaders' roundtable brought together leaders from world-renowned art and design institutions, as well as pioneering founders of newly established schools that have garnered global attention. The speakers bridged the gap between classical heritage and future trends, focusing on current innovations to promote the sustainable development of art and design education.

Distinguished speakers included Anna Barbara, president of POLI.design; Rebecca Wright, dean of the S School at Central Saint Martins College of Art; Rachel Dickson, deputy director of the Glasgow School of Art; Francesco Zurlo, dean of the School of Design at Politecnico di Milano; Yang Dongjiang, chair of the academic committee at AADTHU; Kun-Pyo Lee, dean of the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and John Ochsendorf, founding director of the MIT Morningside Academy for Design.

Barbara called the digital revolution a "revolution of time," urging designers to focus on shaping time rather than just physical space. She said AI will serve as a tool to harmonize human needs with the environment, helping to resolve the conflicts of a digital world and create a more sustainable shared economy.

Wright said that in the face of an uncertain future, design education needs to maintain a positive mindset, and constructing a new "design language" is key to addressing challenges. She emphasized that the real challenge lies not in whether to adopt AI, but in how to integrate technology with uniquely human wisdom.

Dickson said design education should break through traditional disciplinary frameworks and promote educational innovation through cross-field collaboration. She proposed building future design education on a balance of tradition and innovation, with curiosity at its core. She also called for a more inclusive, interdisciplinary system capable of solving global challenges like sustainable development.

Francesco Zurlo elaborated on the concept of interdependent design in his speech, emphasizing that design education must confront complexity rather than simplify problems. He said contemporary design needs to reunite humanistic values with technology. This philosophy, he argued, is essential for training designers who can address complex social challenges and build a sustainable future.

Yang discussed how design education must transform in the AI era. He said the field needs to shift its fundamental value from being technology-oriented to thinking-oriented. He emphasized the need to break through traditional linear knowledge structures and build new teaching systems that maintain professional skill training while focusing on developing students' innovative thinking and systematic reasoning capabilities.

In his speech, Lee traced the historical evolution of design paradigms to reveal the transformation direction of design education in the AI era. He proposed that designers should become "final decision-makers" or "ultimate stewards," urging educators to focus on sharpening students' critical thinking and value judgment.

Ochsendorf emphasized that university education needs to accelerate its transformation. He said every student should possess fundamental design capabilities and complete a personal project portfolio, noting that designers need to lead the application of AI technology while ensuring it serves human needs.

Later that day, two roundtable discussions were held with leaders focusing on the themes "The Future Mission of Design: Interdisciplinary Education and Global Challenges" and "The Coordinates of Institutions Within the Contemporary Context."

The second day featured thematic forums and seminars spanning diverse professional and academic fields. Scholars and industry experts from fields including spatial environments, fashion design, industrial design, information design, smart manufacturing, contemporary art, craft art and digital art engaged in wide-ranging discussions. The topics included "Rhetorical Translation: Aesthetic Resonance Across Cultures,""Double Subjects: Human-Machine Collaboration and Interdisciplinary Integration,""Plural Spaces: The Narrative Tension of Multi-Dimensional Experience," and "Sensory Verbs: Bodily Experience and Artistic Expression."

In addition, the RE-ACTOR: International Art & Design Workshops were held in Milan on Nov. 16, focusing on the theme "AI Protocols for New Space: Embodied Experiences and Ritual Habitats."

The First Ever "Art Toys X Comics" Exhibits Featuring Exclusive Collaborative Art Toys

HONG KONG, Oct. 28, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Organised by the Innovative Entrepreneur Association (IEA) and sponsored by the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA), the Hong Kong Art Toy Story 2024@Jakarta will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia from 15 to 24 November 2024. With the theme "Unbox", the exhibition will feature five thematic zones showcasing over 330 pieces of original art toys designed by renowned and emerging Hong Kong designers, including gigantic installations. This is also the first large scale "Hong Kong Art Toy Story" promotional exhibition held in Indonesia after the Bangkok chapter in 2022, aims to assist Hong Kong's original art toy designers in expanding into overseas markets, particularly the ASEAN markets. The over 330 pieces of exhibits include original art toys created by Hong Kong designers over the past three decades; some of which are museum- and auction-level collectibles that are rare to see in recent years, which allow visitors to appreciate the history and uniqueness of Hong Kong's art toy culture. 

To commemorate the exhibition, IEA held a launch ceremony today in Hong Kong and was honoured to have Mr. LAU Chun, JP, Acting Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, to be the guest of honour and deliver a speech at the ceremony. He was joined by Ms. Cherrie CHONG, President of IEA, and Mr. Johnson CHIANG, the exhibition's curator in launching the exhibition. The 12 exhibiting renowned and emerging Hong Kong designers also brought their original art toys to the launch ceremony, sharing their thoughts about taking part in this exhibition.

Mr. LAU Chun, JP, Acting Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism expressed his gratitude to the IEA for organising this exhibition, which provides a platform for promoting Hong Kong's art toy culture overseas. He wished the exhibition every success and a rewarding expedition for the exhibiting designers and comics artists.

Visitors can learn about these designers' brands and their uniqueness, style, creativity and design concepts.

Brilliant Art Toy Zone

Splendid works from eight brilliant Hong Kong original art toy designers (in no particular order), namely Nicolas LESAFFRE, Jeffery YAU, Kin LEUNG, Gino LAI, Sunny TAM, Joseph TANG, Tony LEUNG and Leo PAK, will be shown in this zone, elaborating the vibrant creativity of Hong Kong art toy brands, some of which are relatively new to the market.

Collaborative Zone of "Art Toys X Comics"

This zone brings together six pairs of highly acclaimed Hong Kong art toy designers and renowned Hong Kong comic artists, collaborated for the first time to create new art toys based on the comic artists' IP characters. They are (in no particular order) Winson MA x KWONG Chi Kit, Jeffery YAU x Pen SO, Kin LEUNG x LI Chi Tak, Leo PAK x Andy SETO, Nicolas LESAFFRE x Bonnie PANG and Joseph TANG x Linus LIU. Some posters, videos, magazines and different peripherals of high historical value will be exhibited to highlight the significant milestones of Hong Kong art toys. 

Discovery Zone

Some of the exhibiting Hong Kong original art toy designers and comic artists will appear at the exhibition in Jakarta to participate in a series of extended activities, including talks, workshops, etc. An AR interactive photography area connecting virtual and real scenes is also set up in this zone. Visitors can take their photos with the art toy characters using AR and then share them on social media platforms to receive fabulous souvenirs contributed by the art toy designers and the organiser from the on-site giant size toy capsule machine.

Mr. Johnson CHIANG, former President of the Hong Kong Society of Illustrators (2014-2016), is the curator of the Hong Kong Art Toy Story 2024@Jakarta. Mr. Chiang is also the creator of cartoon, John Dog, which won the first runner-up of "Original Anime Human Design Competition" in 2015. He has published the creative reference book "Creativity, Come On!", and is currently the lead instructor of the Diploma Programme in Creative Illustration organised by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) Academy. Mr. Chiang has extensive curatorial experiences, including several illustration exhibitions in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Taipei, as well as serving as curator and project chairman of the "Greater China Illustration Awards"* touring exhibition, and curator of the "Hong Kong Illustration X Creative Design Brand Exhibition" * in 2019 and the "Let's Unbox! 2022 Hong Kong Art Tory Story Exhibition, Thailand Chapter"* in 2022.

The exhibition showcases the creations of renowned doll artist Ning Lau, featuring 16 unique dolls that represent endangered species from the OCEAN, SKY, and LAND, as well as the distinctive Oyster Reef habitat in the Asia Pacific region. Each handcrafted doll is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, requiring significant time and effort. Some took almost 40 hours of meticulous handwork, with Ning using specialized techniques like hand-sewing delicate fabrics and intricate embroidery. She transforms the distinctive features of endangered wildlife into elegant, fashion-forward designs. These visually stunning dolls are infused with Ning's passion for conservation, making them precious artistic treasures. More than just masterful sculptures, they serve as ambassadors for the resilience and fragility of our planet's most vulnerable natural wonders, calling for action and awareness.

Enhancing this artistic experience, each area of the exhibition offers an immersive design that transports visitors into these diverse environments. The Ocean section includes a large transparent LED display, creating a transformative underwater experience complemented by wave structures and lighting that evoke the tranquillity and majesty of marine life.

In the SKY section, visitors are surrounded by soaring visuals that celebrate avian species and their habitats, creating an atmosphere of flight and freedom. The LAND area showcases lush greens and earth tones, reflecting the rich biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Meanwhile, the Oyster Reef habitat highlights the significance of these ecosystems in maintaining marine biodiversity and protecting coastlines.

These thoughtfully crafted environments also serve as a platform to showcase TNC's impactful conservation efforts in the Asia-Pacific region including Hong Kong. Informative displays educate visitors on the challenges faced by these ecosystems and the vital work being done to preserve them.

About Ning Lau

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Ning earned her BA (Hons) in Fashion Design from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Initially establishing her career in the luxury fashion sector, Ning transitioned to the art of doll making in 2015, channeling her enduring love for dolls into a full-time vocation. Following her pursuit of culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris last year, she is currently undertaking a Master's degree in Expressive Arts Therapy at The University of Hong Kong, delving into the nexus between creative expression and psychological healing.

About the Artist
Prudence Mak, creator of Chocolate Rain
Prudence Mak is the founder and design director of the Hong Kong creative brand, Chocolate Rain. Her artworks depict the stories of Hong Kong. She pursued her Master's degree at Central Saint Martins in London. In 2010, she was selected as one of Hong Kong's Top Ten Outstanding Designers, and in 2012, she was named one of Hong Kong's Top Ten Outstanding Young Persons. In 2017, she received the GoodSeed Award for her social innovation project "Hong Kong Fairy Tales," and her book won the 2017 Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Award. From 2011 to 2016, her works were exhibited and featured in related merchandise at the British Museum.

Mak actively participates in diverse public art initiatives, like the HK Housing Society 19 District Mural Creative Art Project, transforms blank walls into stunning works that resonate with the locals. Kwok Mang Ho, Frog King
Kwok Mang Ho, also known as "Frog King", is a multi-media, conceptual, visual and performance artist from Hong Kong. He is one of Hong Kong's earliest conceptual artists, and has been a pioneering influence on the art world ecology within the city since the 1970s. Kwok has produced numerous performances, sculptures, paintings and installations in over 3,000 art events all over the world since 1967. He received numerous awards; His works are in local and overseas museums and private collections and were featured at the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. He is recognized as one of the top 30 finalists artist by The Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2005.

Frog King's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 2,417 USD to 14,813 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2013 the record price for this artist at auction is 14,813 USD for FLIGHT, sold at China Guardian Auctions, Beijing in 2013.

Jiwye To, an esteemed international contemporary artist based in Hong Kong and Dubai, has garnered global recognition with exhibitions spanning Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, Korea, Australia, Canada, and France. His works find a home in various prestigious art museums, universities, and associations worldwide.

In the mid-1980s, To played a crucial role in advancing art criticism in Hong Kong through the publication of the "Melting Pot Journal" from 1984 to 1988. SINGAPORE, Dec. 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time, three new Malaysian galleries will present at the second edition of ART SG — the international contemporary art fair bringing the world to Singapore and Southeast Asia — while Malaysian artists are also highlighted in other galleries.

Running from 19 to 21 January 2024 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands, ART SG is one of the highlights of Singapore Art Week, the city's annual celebration of the visual arts.

ART SG 2024, organised by The Art Assembly and presented by founding and lead partner UBS, features 115 exceptional galleries from 33 countries and territories. A total of 39 new galleries will be joining the fair for the first time, of which three will be from Malaysia.

The world-class art fair comprises three main sectors:

• GALLERIES, a showcase of diverse, multi-artist exhibitions;
• FOCUS which features galleries presenting solo or duo artist programs, or curated thematic presentations; and
• FUTURES, which supports younger galleries under the age of 10 years, presenting specially created presentations for ART SG.

Throughout the fair, visitors will also encounter dynamic, large-scale, site-specific installations as part of the PLATFORM sector; experience a curated FILM program hosted in collaboration with ArtScience Museum and participate in a TALKS program featuring art world thought leaders.

PROGRESSIVE PERSPECTIVES FROM DEBUTING MALAYSIAN GALLERIES

Three galleries from Kuala Lumpur will show for the first time at ART SG, offering insights into differing expressions and mediums from the Malaysian capital's burgeoning contemporary art scene.

Wei-Ling Gallery, part of ART SG 2024's FOCUS sector, will feature Malaysian trailblazer Wong Chee Mung's latest series, where he merges traditional painting with the cutting-edge realm of Augmented Reality (AR). Executed masterfully with layers of acrylic paint, each work by Wong Chee Meng unfolds as a multi-layered creation. Augmented Reality (AR) transforms passive observation into active interaction by the audience, forging a symbiotic relationship between observer and art.

The Back Room, part of ART SG's FUTURES sector, will present large, textile-based works broadly revolving around themes of identity and independence by three emerging talents from Southeast Asia and Central America: Marcos Kueh (Malaysia/Netherlands), Red Hong Yi (Malaysia), and Antonio Pichillá Quiacaín (Guatemala). The booth will be anchored by a fluorescent, multi-work woven installation by Marcos Kueh that touches on themes of the postcolonial subject, flanked by woven works by Antonio Pichillá Quiacaín inspired by his indigenous identity and Red Hong Yi's investigations into womanhood.

Spotlighting emerging Malaysian artists, Rissim Contemporary, part of the FUTURES sector, will showcase paintings by Paul Nickson Atia from his series "Torun Tana? (There Is Something About Home)" which delves deep into the artist's personal relationship with Sarawak and his Bidayuh heritage. Alongside are collage works by Saiful Razman from his series "Apartments", made from medical gauze and rolled tissue paper, inspired by the design of low-cost apartments in 1990s Kuala Lumpur.

OTHER MALAYSIAN ARTISTS TO WATCH 

ART SG's main and largest sector — GALLERIES — will feature 68 leading international and regional galleries.

Chok Yue Zan — the winner of the 2017 UOB Painting of the Year (Malaysia) Competition — is one of two featured artists for Singapore gallery Art Porters Gallery's presentation, "Dual Realities: Unraveling the Upside Down World". The booth juxtaposes the works of Zan alongside Bestrizal Besta (Indonesia) to reveal two perspectives of our upside-down world. Zan's adept fusion of creativity, emotion, and technicality solidifies his stature as a multifaceted emerging artist in the region.

Returning gallery Richard Koh Fine Art (Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore) will spotlight the evolving tapestry and rich visual language that characterises Southeast Asia's contemporary art scene through a group of artists from the region. Justin Lim and Yeoh Choo Kuan, both from Malaysia, are on show alongside Htein Lin (Myanmar), Oca Villamiel (Philippines), Ruben Pang (Singapore), and Yim Maline (Cambodia).

Over at Singapore gallery Art Seasons, contemporary Malaysian ceramic artist Umibaizurah is part of the presentation "TIME AND CHANGE". The seriousness of Umibaizurah's subject matter is camouflaged by the playful visual quality of her ceramic sculptures and assemblages.

Every month over July – September 2023, works by 20 emerging artists from the countries of Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam were posted at the online gallery for the public to select the Regional Artist of the Month.

In July, August and September the titles were given to Maziyah Yussof, a multidisciplinary artist from Brunei; Dabi Arnasa, an artist from Bali; and another artist from Bali with artistic name Awshitttttt, consecutively

Based on the amount of votes by the public and BE OPEN's art community members, the August winner Awshitttttt has become the Artist of the Region for Southeast Asia. The artist will be offered a grant of 500 euro from BE OPEN.

A self-taught artist born in 1996 has had a passion for drawing and illustration since he was a child. Awshitttttt is now a professional artist focusing on digital painting and large-scale public murals. Portrait paintings, illustrations, and urban art are his artistic fields of expertise. His trademark is incorporating the delicate and iconic daisy flower as a representation of peace, love, and positivity.

The Founder of BE OPEN Elena Baturina also selected her favourite artist in the region - Chau le Thai Huyen, a digital painter from Vietnam, who describes her own style as "impulsive and like a naive child with constructing and harmonious colors and bold composition."

On the 1^st of October, the focus of the competition moved to Central Africa.

The regional competition runs alongside the regular ongoing work of BE OPEN Art, whose experts every month select 20 new artists for the gallery, and the public names the Artist of the Month and Year.

The initiative will advance the creative legacy, cultural infrastructure, liveability and wellbeing of the UAE capital’s residents through placemaking and collective memory

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, March 21, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has announced the launch of Public Art Abu Dhabi, a wide-reaching initiative that will further the emirate’s long legacy of investing in culture and embedding it in the fabric of society.

The initiative has launched on 20 March with the unveiling of WAVE, a public digital media artwork by the artistic collective d’strict, in Abu Dhabi’s Cultural Foundation. Using an anamorphic illusion technique, the 2D installation recreates perpetually surging three-dimensional waves and was first showcased at COEX K-Pop Square, Seoul, South Korea.

Public Art Abu Dhabi’s programmes will reflect the emirate’s intrinsic cultural identity, anchoring a sense of belonging and fostering creativity. Integral to this initiative is its community engagement efforts. Acting as a catalyst for creativity and artistic expression in the public domain, Public Art Abu Dhabi will offer opportunities for everyone to engage with new cultural programming.

An investment of over 35 million US dollars will be dedicated to the initiative annually, to support the emirate’s wider creative industries through public art.

Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, opening in November 2024, will be led by Reem Fadda, Director of the Cultural Foundation and Abu Dhabi Cultural Programmes, and the independent curator Galit Eilat. The curators previously worked together between 2006 and 2009 co-curating the multifaceted and award-winning project 'Liminal Spaces' in Palestine, Israel and Germany. Fadda and Eilat will bring their experience of working on projects involving a deep engagement with communities and art in the public domain to the first Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial.

Viewers will embark on an immersive water journey and discover the artworks from a fresh perspective. The exhibition is set to connect the shores of different islands and celebrate Abu Dhabi’s natural beauty. The artworks will vary from light projections, sculptures and installations to performances, creating a surreal and magical outlook on the surrounding landscapes.

Public Art Abu Dhabi will further make its mark with a series of yearly direct commissions across the emirate's landmarks, including tunnels, roundabouts, bridges, parks etc. Engaging artists to create significant permanent or temporary contributions, the commissions will draw inspiration from the UAE capital’s distinctive traits and highlight its modern heritage and natural landscapes. About Reem Fadda and Galit Eilat’s collaborative project ‘Liminal Spaces’

‘Liminal Spaces’ is a multifaceted and award-winning project, co-curated by Reem Fadda and Galit Eilat from 2006 to 2009. Spanning Palestine, Israel and Germany, it invited artists and cultural practitioners to examine the urban condition of physical segregation within a reality of occupation and facilitated the production of artworks, residencies, conferences, seminars, publications and alike.

Directed by Liu Jian, a professor at China Academy of Art's School of Animation and Games, and produced by a team of teachers and students over a span of five years, the film is a significant creative and pedagogical product of China Academy of Art's pursuit of "neorealistic animation". Art College 1994 is a unique 2D hand-drawn animated film with aesthetics that exhibits distinctive Chinese elements. Its director began his education in Chinese paintings. Well versed in the domain, Prof. Liu employed techniques found in Chinese paintings groundbreakingly. The result is scenes and characters that are undisputedly, authentically Chinese and of an aesthetic style distinguishable from American and Japanese animation.

With its detailed art, realism, and comfortable pacing, the film provides a different aesthetic experience that diverges from the usual spectacle of traditional animated films and stands out among Chinese animations. It has broadened the variety of Chinese animated films available on the market as well as the themes they explore, and is a sign of growing diversity in a thriving Chinese animation sector.

Art College 1994 tells a story that takes place in an art school in the 1990s. Amidst the clash of idealism vs. reality as well as tradition vs. modernity, a group of youths live their lives to the fullest as they pursue art and their dreams, form strong friendships and fall in love. The early 1990s marked the advent of the modern arts in China, when new artistic ideologies flooded the minds of young people who were passionate about the arts, inspiring and confounding them alike. "In 2016, I returned to my alma mater. It was been over 20 years since I left the place. A row of new, tidy buildings of steel and concrete stood like a wall between the past and the present, cleaving my memories into two. I heard someone call my name then. I turned around, and saw my former teacher. His hair had gone white. He was standing next to a couple of young students who were laughing. Suddenly, I was struck by the harsh reality of time. That was when the seed of the movie was sowed in my head. I joined China Academy of Art and became a teacher after that, which gave me new ideas for Art College 1994.It isn't a nostalgic film, but one that celebrates the beauty of life and art with every young person and every young soul hidden within an old person.I want it to be a song that is loud and earnest, that reaches deep into every young soul, and sings praises of their courage and vitality."

The 73^rd Berlinale will officially kick off on February 16, 2023. Art College 1994 will have its premiere at the festival. The film currently boasts a diverse voice-acting cast which includes directors Jia Zhangke, Zheng Dasheng, and Xu Lei, film producer Wang Hongwei, musicians Peng Lei and Ren Ke, academic Xu Zhiyuan, and founder of Modern Sky and Strawberry Music Festival Shen Lihui. François Pinault's organisation achieved the best performance thanks to a Post-War & Contemporary Art evening sale that alone took $539 million from just 51 lots sold.

"Not only is demand strong for the best artworks… above all the market seems to have moved into a new paradigm that will allow it to renew its offer: it can now produce new 'classics' by offering 'masterpieces of Contemporary art'.

"This is what we saw with Jeff Koons' Rabbit (1986) sculpture. It was presented by Christie's as an 'icon' of Contemporary Art, in the same way as paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, and probably certain works by Damien Hirst as well. But we will have to wait until the next big sales to see confirmation of this trend."

Jeff Koons is now more expensive than Van Gogh or Rubens...

A new record of $91 million - making Jeff Koons the world's most valued living artist - also gives him a special place in Art History. To everyone's surprise, his Rabbit (1986) became more expensive on the auction market than any of Van Gogh's works to date. The Dutch master's record is still standing at $82.5 million since his Portrait du Docteur Gachet sold in 1990. 

Only 11 artists in auction history have ever generated results above the Jeff Koons Rabbit: da Vinci, Picasso, Modigliani, Bacon, Qi Baishi, Munch, Monet, Basquiat, Warhol, Lichtenstein and Hopper. If the Jeff Koons Market has been somewhat dormant in recent years, it is now completely revived... And with him, the entire Contemporary Art machine has received a boost.

Rauschenberg at the top

Two years after his retrospective at the MoMA and the Tate Modern, Robert Rauschenberg is a bright star of the auction market. The American artist-sculptor, who campaigned for the introduction of artists' resale rights after the sale of the Robert Scull collection in 1973, probably didn't imagine that his works would ever reach such amounts.

On 15 May 2019, his Buffalo II reached $88 million at Christie's. Locked up for 54 years in the collection of Robert B. Mayer, who acquired it directly from the Leo Castelli Gallery, this painting is both an ode to and a critique of the American Dream. This new record puts him in the same league as his contemporaries Andy Warhol ($105.4 million) and Roy Lichtenstein ($96.4 million).

Monet triggers the 10th best-ever Fine Art auction result of all time

As exciting as a summer soap opera...! After the announcement of the sale of Claude Monet's (1840-1926) Meules at Sotheby's NY on 14 May, the question of a possible record was on everyone's lips! The last haystacks painting auctioned - with similar dimensions, date and composition - fetched more than $80 million at Christie's NY in November 2016. Monet's absolute record dates back to the sale of the Rockefeller collection in May 2018 when his Nympheas en fleur fetched nearly $85 million (also at Christie's NY)… The suspense is now over: for eight long minutes on 14 May six bidders competed for the masterpiece. Harry Dalmeny finally brought the hammer down at $110.7 million. That's more than 40 times its previous value: already sold in 1986 for $2.53 million, the work belonged to the descendants of Bertha and Potter Palmer, wealthy Chicago collectors, who acquired the Meules painting through Paul Durand-Ruel in 1891.

Sotheby's had already set the bar high - betting on the work's prestigious provenance - giving the work a low estimate of $55 million (a fact that did not go unnoticed in the art press)... However, in the end, an Impressionist painting has crossed the symbolic threshold of $100 million for the first time ever. Meules also enters the Top 10 most expensive artworks ever sold publicly. The interest for the Impressionists and 19th century works is undeniable, despite the attraction for Contemporary Art and the new generation of bidders arriving on the market. Asian collectors are particularly enthusiastic and are now contribute to the stability of this section of the market.

Speaking at the exhibition's opening, Cai Shandi, the cultural counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Singapore, said that CGTN's presentation marks an important milestone for the CGTN Art Series' international outreach.

The exhibition, he said, serves not only as a global platform for showcasing outstanding traditional Chinese culture, but also as a new opportunity for cultural exchange between China and Singapore.

In his remarks, Seng Yu Jin, director for curatorial, research and exhibitions at the National Gallery Singapore, praised the CGTN Art Series as a compelling example of how media in the digital era can actively participate in the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage.

Now in its fourth edition, this year's ART SG brings together 106 galleries and art institutions from over 30 countries and regions, attracting collectors, artists, curators, representatives of global brands, museum professionals, and academic communities.

Gelam Gallery

The Gelam Gallery made its debut last month at the back lanes of Kampong Gelam  (also known as Kampong Glam) featuring an international eclectic mix of artists' art pieces from Singapore, Malaysia, China, Myanmar, France and UK from professionals to graduates from LaSALLE College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and also some self-taught artists from various professional backgrounds.
