It held the treasured legacy of century-old bamboo weaving, carefully nurtured by both local residents and the government. Yet, like a hidden gem, its story remained largely untold. But in 2024, everything began to change. The "Xuyouji" art and social practice project was launched, with the Nanhai government partnering with a collective of artists to transform this ancient market into a vibrant, community-driven space—where culture, commerce, and neighborly harmony would converge.

Community residents participate in the creative process in the artist's workshop, preparing together for the annual Art Bazaar big exhibition.

"Xuyouji", which means "travelogue of art bazaar" in Chinese, is a long-term social innovation initiative, using art as a catalyst, the community as the core body, and the form of art bazaar as its stage. It sprouted from the practice in "Luohang Art Bazaar" and has become a living classroom for intangible cultural heritage as well as a vivid example of artistic intervention in urban and rural renewal.

A Metamorphosis: From Forgotten Market to Community Garden

Two years ago, Luohang was still a quiet, unassuming place. The traditional craft of bamboo weaving, once a proud heritage, had been passed down through a few elderly artisans. Though cherished, its relevance was fading as its practical use diminished.

In 2024, change began quietly taking root.

Artist collectives, including those led by Xiangyang, arrived and immersed themselves in the local culture. They gathered historical insights into Luohang and integrated their art forms—such as modern dance and installations—into the daily lives of the residents.

The results were transformative: one nearly abandoned house was carefully renovated by the artists and turned into a small garden, equipped with an automated irrigation system. What was once barren land became a beautiful, functional space—children played, and the elderly rested. This newly created public space is now lovingly maintained by local residents, who tend to the plants and flowers, turning it into a vibrant hub.

In just one year, the community witnessed a wave of collaboration. Entrepreneurial associations and women's federations came together to build distinctive gardens, while residents contributed vacant land for development. Even local industrial parks repurposed neglected spaces into shared community gardens. Today, six unique gardens dedicated to science and aesthetic education have sprung up around the market, realizing the vision of "a garden just a minute or two away from home."

The ancient art of bamboo weaving has now taken on new life. Transforming into modern lighting, abstract installations, and other art forms, it's become part of the community's daily surroundings. Artist studios and dance troupes have moved into old homes, giving new energy to these historic buildings. New businesses—coffee stands, bookstores, and boutique stores—have begun to thrive, creating a diverse commercial ecosystem.

The community, once mere onlookers, is now actively participating, becoming co-creators in the ongoing transformation.

Bamboo Weaving as a Bridge: A Path to Cultural Revival

At the start of the project, many elderly weavers were skeptical. "This isn't practical, and no one will buy it," they would say. When foreign artists suggested making the baskets smaller, they rejected the idea, thinking it was unnecessary.

But a breakthrough came through patience and consistent guidance. The artistic team began reimagining bamboo weaving—turning it into modern lighting fixtures, abstract sculptures, and other pieces of art. The once purely functional craft was now appreciated for its aesthetic value, opening the door to new possibilities.

Gradually, the elderly artisans' attitudes shifted. What began as a tentative experiment grew into a collaborative exchange, as they began holding "workshops" to refine their craft. The once "useful" items were now seen as "art"—objects worthy of creative expression and innovation.

The project's success attracted visitors from near and far, driving the growth of local shops and accommodations. To ensure that this artistic spark became a sustainable tradition, the team introduced a "Bamboo Weaving Big Ball" co-creation project, allowing residents to start by splitting bamboo slices and experience the entire process from raw material to artwork, passing on the warmth of the craft through their hands-on involvement. University students bring their graduation projects to the bazaar, breathing new life into tradition with fresh perspectives. In addition, universities such as Guangdong University of Finance and Economics and Foshan University have actively engaged with research projects, fostering a positive cycle of 'teaching—creation—practice'.

The Travelogue of Art Bazaar: Weaving a New Path from Luohang

What began as a localized art project in Danzao Town has now grown into one of the three major district-level cultural and tourism brands, alongside the Land Art Festival and the Dragon Boat Super League. This transformation owes much to the Nanhai government's support and long-term vision.

Through the "Hundred-County, Thousand-Town, Ten-Thousand-Village High-Quality Development Project" - a rural development initiative that aims to improve environmental conditions and quality of life in rural areas, the government not only provided financial backing but also introduced the "Cultural Industry Special Commissioner" system, bringing together art, technology, and business in an innovative collaboration. By fostering a partnership between government, artists, and local communities, the project has thrived, blending professional artistry with local needs.

This careful nurturing has created an exceptionally fertile ground for community-based art. In future plans, more local elements will be integrated with diverse artistic forms, flourishing like a garden in full bloom. Today, the scope of 'Xuyouji' is gradually expanding. This expansion is not a simple replication but is based on thorough research into the local conditions and cultural roots of each area, ensuring that every project aligns with the development of its community.

In 2025, the project will expand to Shishan Town in Nanhai District, leveraging the area's industrial history and its transportation advantages, including the Guangshan Railway, to create the "Xiaotang International Art District." The Shishan initiative will focus on industrial design, creating a unique, differentiated cultural and economic development model.

"Xuyouji" is pioneering a replicable path for urban and rural renewal. From revitalizing intangible cultural heritage in Luohang Art Bazaar to transforming industrial sites in Shishan, the project consistently adheres to an artistic philosophy that puts ideas first, with curators acting as bridges between artists, communities, and governments.

By tapping into the creative potential of each region, the project proves that art can do more than just decorate—it can revitalize. When traditional crafts meet modern innovation and when local needs align with government support, even the oldest markets can be given new life. As "Xuyouji" continues to unfold, more communities will find their own path to cultural and artistic renewal.
Hashtag: #NextIslandArtCenter

The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement.

She said AI will serve as a tool to harmonize human needs with the environment, helping to resolve the conflicts of a digital world and create a more sustainable shared economy.

Wright said that in the face of an uncertain future, design education needs to maintain a positive mindset, and constructing a new "design language" is key to addressing challenges. She emphasized that the real challenge lies not in whether to adopt AI, but in how to integrate technology with uniquely human wisdom.

Dickson said design education should break through traditional disciplinary frameworks and promote educational innovation through cross-field collaboration. She proposed building future design education on a balance of tradition and innovation, with curiosity at its core. She also called for a more inclusive, interdisciplinary system capable of solving global challenges like sustainable development.

Francesco Zurlo elaborated on the concept of interdependent design in his speech, emphasizing that design education must confront complexity rather than simplify problems. He said contemporary design needs to reunite humanistic values with technology. This philosophy, he argued, is essential for training designers who can address complex social challenges and build a sustainable future.

Yang discussed how design education must transform in the AI era. He said the field needs to shift its fundamental value from being technology-oriented to thinking-oriented. He emphasized the need to break through traditional linear knowledge structures and build new teaching systems that maintain professional skill training while focusing on developing students' innovative thinking and systematic reasoning capabilities.

In his speech, Lee traced the historical evolution of design paradigms to reveal the transformation direction of design education in the AI era. He said every student should possess fundamental design capabilities and complete a personal project portfolio, noting that designers need to lead the application of AI technology while ensuring it serves human needs.

Later that day, two roundtable discussions were held with leaders focusing on the themes "The Future Mission of Design: Interdisciplinary Education and Global Challenges" and "The Coordinates of Institutions Within the Contemporary Context."

The second day featured thematic forums and seminars spanning diverse professional and academic fields. Scholars and industry experts from fields including spatial environments, fashion design, industrial design, information design, smart manufacturing, contemporary art, craft art and digital art engaged in wide-ranging discussions. The news came as a pleasant surprise as it was the final film shortlisted in the annual international film festival. This marked a new record for the Chinese animated film industry.

Directed by Liu Jian, a professor at China Academy of Art's School of Animation and Games, and produced by a team of teachers and students over a span of five years, the film is a significant creative and pedagogical product of China Academy of Art's pursuit of "neorealistic animation". The Academy has yielded fruitful results in recent years, with student work taking centerstage and winning recognition at local and international film festivals. Graduation films such as Hippocampus and A Dog Under Bridge garnered the most prestigious awards at the Festival International du Film d'Animation d'Annecy for graduation films. Shortlisted in the Berlinale Competition section, which is widely regarded as one of the three top film festivals in the world, Art College 1994 once again showcased the education and creative competencies of China Academy of Art's School of Animation and Games.

Art College 1994 is a unique 2D hand-drawn animated film with aesthetics that exhibits distinctive Chinese elements. Its director began his education in Chinese paintings. Well versed in the domain, Prof. Liu employed techniques found in Chinese paintings groundbreakingly. The result is scenes and characters that are undisputedly, authentically Chinese and of an aesthetic style distinguishable from American and Japanese animation.

Scene from the film

With its detailed art, realism, and comfortable pacing, the film provides a different aesthetic experience that diverges from the usual spectacle of traditional animated films and stands out among Chinese animations. It has broadened the variety of Chinese animated films available on the market as well as the themes they explore, and is a sign of growing diversity in a thriving Chinese animation sector.

Art College 1994 tells a story that takes place in an art school in the 1990s. Amidst the clash of idealism vs. reality as well as tradition vs. modernity, a group of youths live their lives to the fullest as they pursue art and their dreams, form strong friendships and fall in love. A unique tale of youth is painted under the brush of a distinctive narrative and aesthetic style.

The early 1990s marked the advent of the modern arts in China, when new artistic ideologies flooded the minds of young people who were passionate about the arts, inspiring and confounding them alike. Seeming naive and childish, their relentless quest for and attempts to gain answers are nevertheless rooted in authenticity and earnestness that move us. Art College 1994 is a "song of youth" that is dedicated to all artists. The art education themes that are explored in the film remain relevant today.

When asked why he made the film, Prof. Liu said,
"In 2016, I returned to my alma mater. It was been over 20 years since I left the place. A row of new, tidy buildings of steel and concrete stood like a wall between the past and the present, cleaving my memories into two. I heard someone call my name then. I turned around, and saw my former teacher. His hair had gone white. He was standing next to a couple of young students who were laughing. Suddenly, I was struck by the harsh reality of time. That was when the seed of the movie was sowed in my head. I joined China Academy of Art and became a teacher after that, which gave me new ideas for Art College 1994.It isn't a nostalgic film, but one that celebrates the beauty of life and art with every young person and every young soul hidden within an old person.I want it to be a song that is loud and earnest, that reaches deep into every young soul, and sings praises of their courage and vitality."

The 73rd Berlinale will officially kick off on February 16, 2023. Art College 1994 will have its premiere at the festival. The film currently boasts a diverse voice-acting cast which includes directors Jia Zhangke, Zheng Dasheng, and Xu Lei, film producer Wang Hongwei, musicians Peng Lei and Ren Ke, academic Xu Zhiyuan, and founder of Modern Sky and Strawberry Music Festival Shen Lihui. Upcoming announcements of celebrated actors joining the cast will be made soon.

The film is scheduled to be screened across China in 2023.

PARIS, May 21, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Art Market might have seemed a little hungover in early 2019, in need of some event that would reassure everyone, and that's exactly what New York's prestige sales did last week. The results proved that the hammer prices recorded in Q1 in London, notably for David Hockney and Claude Monet, as well as in Hong Kong for Zhang Daqian and Kaws, reflect a new paradigm that is generally favorable for the global Art Market as a whole.

Evolution of the record auction price for a living artist. Collective work thierry Ehrmann - The Abode of Chaos (Right)

thierry Ehrmann, Artprice's founder/CEO, is delighted: "Within just five days, Christie's, Sotheby's, Phillips and Bonhams organized 16 sales in New York generating a total turnover of $2.06 billion! François Pinault's organisation achieved the best performance thanks to a Post-War & Contemporary Art evening sale that alone took $539 million from just 51 lots sold.

"Not only is demand strong for the best artworks… above all the market seems to have moved into a new paradigm that will allow it to renew its offer: it can now produce new 'classics' by offering 'masterpieces of Contemporary art'.

"This is what we saw with Jeff Koons' Rabbit (1986) sculpture. It was presented by Christie's as an 'icon' of Contemporary Art, in the same way as paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat, and probably certain works by Damien Hirst as well. But we will have to wait until the next big sales to see confirmation of this trend."

Jeff Koons is now more expensive than Van Gogh or Rubens...

A new record of $91 million - making Jeff Koons the world's most valued living artist - also gives him a special place in Art History. To everyone's surprise, his Rabbit (1986) became more expensive on the auction market than any of Van Gogh's works to date. The Dutch master's record is still standing at $82.5 million since his Portrait du Docteur Gachet sold in 1990.

Only 11 artists in auction history have ever generated results above the Jeff Koons Rabbit: da Vinci, Picasso, Modigliani, Bacon, Qi Baishi, Munch, Monet, Basquiat, Warhol, Lichtenstein and Hopper. If the Jeff Koons Market has been somewhat dormant in recent years, it is now completely revived... And with him, the entire Contemporary Art machine has received a boost.

Rauschenberg at the top

Two years after his retrospective at the MoMA and the Tate Modern, Robert Rauschenberg is a bright star of the auction market. The American artist-sculptor, who campaigned for the introduction of artists' resale rights after the sale of the Robert Scull collection in 1973, probably didn't imagine that his works would ever reach such amounts.

On 15 May 2019, his Buffalo II reached $88 million at Christie's. Locked up for 54 years in the collection of Robert B. Mayer, who acquired it directly from the Leo Castelli Gallery, this painting is both an ode to and a critique of the American Dream. This new record puts him in the same league as his contemporaries Andy Warhol ($105.4 million) and Roy Lichtenstein ($96.4 million).

Monet triggers the 10th best-ever Fine Art auction result of all time

As exciting as a summer soap opera...! After the announcement of the sale of Claude Monet's (1840-1926) Meules at Sotheby's NY on 14 May, the question of a possible record was on everyone's lips! The last haystacks painting auctioned - with similar dimensions, date and composition - fetched more than $80 million at Christie's NY in November 2016. Monet's absolute record dates back to the sale of the Rockefeller collection in May 2018 when his Nympheas en fleur fetched nearly $85 million (also at Christie's NY)… The suspense is now over: for eight long minutes on 14 May six bidders competed for the masterpiece. Harry Dalmeny finally brought the hammer down at $110.7 million. That's more than 40 times its previous value: already sold in 1986 for $2.53 million, the work belonged to the descendants of Bertha and Potter Palmer, wealthy Chicago collectors, who acquired the Meules painting through Paul Durand-Ruel in 1891.

Sotheby's had already set the bar high - betting on the work's prestigious provenance - giving the work a low estimate of $55 million (a fact that did not go unnoticed in the art press)... However, in the end, an Impressionist painting has crossed the symbolic threshold of $100 million for the first time ever. Meules also enters the Top 10 most expensive artworks ever sold publicly. The interest for the Impressionists and 19th century works is undeniable, despite the attraction for Contemporary Art and the new generation of bidders arriving on the market. Asian collectors are particularly enthusiastic and are now contribute to the stability of this section of the market.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Media OutReach - 13 March 2022 - Bybit, the world's fastest growing cryptocurrency exchange, is pleased to support the digital art chapter of Art Dubai 2022 at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai. After a three-year break, the global platform for artistic expressions from the Middle East and Global South goes beyond the realms of physical art to empower creatives in the digital dimension in its 15th edition, its most ambitious and extensive to date.

Bybit is delighted to welcome Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum into the Bybit universe for our inaugural participation as Lead Partner of Art Dubai 2022 on March 9, 2022

Bybit is the Lead Partner of Art Dubai Digital, a new section of the iconic art fair to bridge between the rapidly-developing crypto-sphere and the international art market.

Bybit and Art Dubai meet at the intersection of digital art forms and human creativity amidst the paradigm shift of our times. Artists and creatives are no strangers to digital innovations and the blurring of boundaries between visions and realities, with roots in digital artistry going back to the 1980s. The global pandemic has accelerated the building of new worlds and the coming together of new artistic communities in the digital space.

The new Art Dubai Digital section brings to life art forms transcending conventional constraints. Showcasing 17 presentations from both traditional galleries and digitally native ones, the digital section gives a voice to emerging artists and market participants, many of whom are first-timers at an international art fair.

Art lovers looking to experience the art or support an artist can join the fair through the Bybit NFT Marketplace, now offering 15 artworks from the participating galleries of Art Dubai.

Art Dubai 2022 also presents Bybit Talks, a new addition to facilitate dialogues between the crypto space and the art world to make crypto, web3 digital practices and NFTs concepts and opportunities more accessible to the public.

Bybit's presence at Art Dubai 2022 includes a limited run of NFTs at the booth featuring artists and art collectives MIRL (Made in Real Life), Song Ting, Viia Yeon, Maruchef, Hyuck, S.R Innovation Lab, Oscar Oiwa, Yeo Huang Joo, Saule Dyussenbina, Ziyang Wu, Yasuo Nomura, Kevin Heisner and SIM_Moby.

The timely drive for digital art highlights the zeitgeist of a post-pandemic world of mixed realities. The Bybit NFT Marketplace provides an integrated one-stop destination for artists, creators and collectors, to create, and sell or trade on the Ethereum ERC-721 standard through their spot accounts — providing the tools of digital ownership to collectors of all knowledge and skill levels.

"Art Dubai's admirable work in elevating talent to the global stage, particularly with artists from underrepresented regions, echoes Bybit's endeavor to democratize next level trading for the broader public. NFTs are one of the new tools to reinvent and rewire the art market, and a new generation of artists and art patrons are drawn to a new parallel world that rewards authenticity and the imaginative minds," said Igneus Terrenus, Head of Communications at Bybit.

"There are two important legs in the projects. We have galleries from the physical world and galleries that only exist in the metaverse. And to complement these and help understand what they're going to be showcasing, we have one of the most exciting educational programs today, among them is Bybit Talks by Bybit, the sponsor of the digital section, and the Global Art Forum," said Pablo del Val, Artistic Director of Art Dubai at the opening address.

"In the last two years, the 3D world lost approximately half a dimension. At the same time, new multiple dimensions have been discovered online. We are now extensions of our devices and this changes everything. It's the kind of paradigm shift that civilization sees every few 100 years. We've been going through these changes arguably for the last 30 years and now in a more and more accelerated manner, evidenced in the mainstreaming of crypto, blockchain technologies and NFTs over just the last year. In the two and a half dimension, digital artifacts and crypto economies are as real or unreal as anything else. And there's such rapid growth in digital platforms, it's often difficult to keep track even for seasoned insiders. So the Bybit talks will explore the unknown past and the possible futures of NFT, how our ideas and experiences of media buy change with decentralized institutions, and what kind of values beyond merely the monetary is at stake with these new technologies," remarked Shumon Basar, Commissioner, Global Art Forum.

About Bybit

Bybit is a cryptocurrency exchange established in March 2018 to offer a professional platform where crypto traders can find an ultra-fast matching engine, excellent customer service, and multilingual community support.
