This open-pit coal mine has an annual production capacity of 8 million tons.

In late spring, workers in the coal mine reclamation greenhouses actively plant seedlings to make the most of the farming season.

This scene is not from a typical ecological farm's spring planting but represents a significant transformation taking place within a traditional coal enterprise.

Minda Coal Mine is the largest open-pit mine in Dongsheng District, producing up to 8 million tons of coal annually. Just a few hundred meters away, mining operations continue as usual; meanwhile, on the other side, 300 greenhouses flourish all year round, and the livestock area produces 6,000 pigs, 2,000 heads of cattle, 4,000 sheep, and 10,000 chickens annually.

This transformation began in 2018. Initially, the goal was simple: to provide mine workers with safe, locally produced vegetables and meat. Seven years later, this integrated "planting and breeding circular chain" has achieved tangible economic results. In 2025, the agricultural output value reached 12 million yuan, benefiting 150 farming households in Tongchuan Town, with each household seeing an average annual income increase of 30,000 yuan. The ecological supermarket in Toudao Lane, Dongsheng District, which opened just five months ago, now serves approximately 300 customers daily, with daily sales exceeding 10,000 yuan.

The challenges here extend beyond deciding what to plant.

Situated on the Ordos Plateau, Minda Coal Mine experiences less than 400 millimeters of annual rainfall, with drought occurring nine years out of ten. The reclamation area initially consisted largely of stripped rock and soil, with organic matter content as low as 0.2%. To address this, the mine invested 150 million yuan to construct 11 water storage ponds that collect rainwater from slopes, roads, and rooftops, creating a "rainwater bank" with a total capacity of 5,000 cubic meters, achieving 100% utilization of collected rainwater. Soil quality was enhanced through screening, backfilling, and the application of biological fertilizers, increasing the organic matter content across 14,000 mu of reclaimed land from 0.2% to 1.5%.

In the reclamation area, rows of chicken coops are neatly arranged, with tens of thousands of free-range ecological chickens roaming freely.

"Coal will eventually run out, but the land must be preserved for future generations." A statement from the head of Minda Coal Mine highlights a long-term challenge faced by resource-dependent regions.

Currently, Dongsheng District has achieved an 87% green mine certification rate, completed reclamation greening of 820 hectares, and manages 1,525 hectares of goaf areas. New industries such as sea buckthorn cultivation, photovoltaics, agriculture, and animal husbandry have been established in the reclamation area. Where coal mining once accounted for 90% of income, ecological agriculture now contributes 18%, with projections of an increase to 35% by 2027. Plans are underway for slaughterhouses, food processing plants, feed factories, fertilizer plants, and breeding bases.

From coal mining to farming, from the "rainwater bank" to supermarket shelves, the spring of 2026 at Minda Coal Mine offers a promising answer to a common question in China's resource-based regions: after underground resources are depleted, how can above-ground advantages be sustainably leveraged?
Hashtag: #DongshengDistrictIntegratedMediaCenter

The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement.

The day also coincided with World Environment Day, with China's theme being "Comprehensive Green Transformation: Building a Beautiful China Together" for this year's observance.

Building on the outcomes and networks established through previous events in the series, the dialogue combines field visits with thematic discussions, showcasing scalable, innovative practices that contribute to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) and support national pathways toward carbon neutrality and climate-resilient development, and continues into June 6 across various sites in Jiuquan.

The dialogue was jointly organized by the China Internet Information Center (CIIC), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representation in China, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) China Office, the Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP-CSAM), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in China. It was also supported by the China Green Foundation, a civil society organization that promotes afforestation and environmental awareness, and by the Ant Forest Foundation, which was launched by Ant Financial Services Group, an affiliate of Alibaba.

More than 100 people attended either in person or online, representing eight countries and a diverse range of stakeholders, including eight international organizations, government agencies, embassies in China, United Nations entities, research institutions, private-sector partners, civil society organizations, beneficiary farmers and the media.

Yu Yunquan, vice president of the China International Communications Group (CICG), highlighted the increasingly important role of science and technology in advancing ecological governance and rural development in his opening speech. Yu noted that technological innovation is evolving from merely "shaping the environment" to "creating value" and that this transformation drives new opportunities for sustainable growth. He emphasized that leveraging science and technology for the purpose of promoting rural development is a vital pathway to strengthening climate resilience and accelerating the green transformation of agriculture in addition to being a vivid demonstration of the principle that "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets."

"Building an ecological civilization requires compelling narratives that resonate with people in addition to sustained, hands-on efforts on the ground," he observed.

A comprehensive international communication institution, CICG remains committed to sharing the story of Chinese modernization with global audiences. Yu further stressed CICG's readiness to leverage its strengths in international communication and multi-stakeholder engagement to help foster platforms for international cooperation.

"We are willing to work hand in hand with partners around the world to build a community of innovation and a community of knowledge," he concluded. "Together, we can better tell the stories of ecological civilization and green development, contribute to greater global consensus, and bring collective wisdom and strength to building a shared future for all life on Earth."

"Achieving climate resilience and a green transition will require sustained investment and collective action," stated Dima Al-Khatib, director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation. "By leveraging South-South and triangular cooperation, climate and development finance, and private-sector engagement, countries can mobilize the resources, expertise, and innovation needed to support communities, local actors, research institutions, and practitioners at scale."

"China's experience offers valuable lessons," Stephen Jackson, UN resident coordinator in China, remarked. "Programs such as the 'Three‑North' Shelterbelt [A massive, ongoing afforestation program spanning northern China that was launched in 1978 in order to combat the rapid expansion of the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts and is also known as China's Great Green Wall] and Ant Forest show how long‑term vision, innovation, and public participation can restore ecosystems and improve livelihoods."

He also emphasized that lasting progress requires partnership, knowledge sharing and collective action.

Ai Yinfang, deputy director-general of the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE), stressed that attention should be paid to inclusiveness, localization, and synergy when implementing relevant projects in an opening speech. She stated that, in the future, CICETE will continue to identify more "replicable and implementable" practical cases, promote diversified capacity-building in order to help policymakers and practitioners in developing countries enhance their hands-on capabilities in green transformation, and facilitate the coordination of multilateral and bilateral resources so that China's successful experience can be more effectively shared abroad, contributing China's strength to the development of Global South countries and the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Huang Xiaochun, deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China's (CPC) Jinta County Committee and head of Jinta County, observed in his welcoming speech that Jinta is among the regions most severely affected by desertification and land sandification in China. The deputy secretary noted that the people of Jinta have remained steadfast in their efforts to expand green cover and combat desertification since the 1950s and that the county has actively aligned its development with the country's "dual-carbon" objectives since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which was held in 2012. Huang stated that Jinta has completed 850,000 mu (56,700 ha) of afforestation and reforestation and protected 539,000 mu (35,900 ha) of desertified land via enclosure and conservation measures and that these efforts have resulted in both desertified and sandy land areas in the county contracting continuously for more than two decades while efforts to prevent wind erosion and stabilize sand have progressed in tandem with rising incomes for local farmers.

"The continuous improvement of the ecological environment that has occurred has breathed new life into Jinta while providing a strong foundation for rural green transformation, industrial renewal and upgrading, and climate resilience," Huang added. "Green development has become the most distinctive hallmark of Jinta's development."

"IFAD is committed to supporting efforts that enhance the application of climate-adaptive technologies, promote green energy, and foster circular economies – ensuring that the most vulnerable are not left behind in this transformation," noted Nii Quaye-Kumah, IFAD China representative and head of the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) Centre for Asia-Pacific. "We believe that empowering rural communities with the right tools and knowledge is the cornerstone of sustainable development."

In a keynote speech, Lei Jiaqiang, a desertification control expert and research fellow at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated, "Through science-based desertification control and innovative development models, China has become the first country to achieve zero net land degradation, offering an effective solution to global desertification challenges."

He remarked that China has pioneered a sustainable development pathway that integrates desertification control, ecological restoration, and economic development and that this progress has been driven by technologies and practices such as straw checkerboard sand barriers, water-efficient afforestation, and the development of desert-based industries alongside emerging innovations including the ecological use of brackish water and the integration of photovoltaic power generation with ecosystem restoration.

Looking ahead, Lei emphasized the importance of strengthening international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. He mentioned that China seeks to advance the integration of desertification control and industrial development and work with countries around the world to build a global community dedicated to combating desertification and promoting sustainable development through platforms such as the China-Africa Green Technology Park demonstration project – a collaborative desertification control and sustainable agriculture demonstration project located in Bir El Barka, Mauritania, that is designed to transform harsh desert environments into sustainable green zones using Chinese sand-fixing, water-saving, and dryland farming techniques and technologies.

Xu Yinlong, research fellow at the Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), remarked in a keynote speech that global warming has caused the frequency and intensity of extreme climate events in China to reach record levels and that this phenomenon exposes agricultural production to increasingly severe climate-related risks and underscores the urgent necessity of strengthening climate change adaptation efforts.

He also observed that climate warming is enabling the cultivation areas of China's major crops to expand northward and westward and that this creates new opportunities to optimize the country's agricultural production structure. Xu added that the adoption of low-carbon agricultural techniques and technologies can improve the quality of agricultural products and that this offers a practical pathway toward high-quality and sustainable agricultural development in addition to enhancing carbon sequestration and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

An excerpt from a report corresponding with the dialogue known as Sci-Tech Empowering Rural Transformation: 2026 Climate Resilience was distributed at the event as well. The full report is scheduled to be released in September.

Zheng Wenhua, deputy head of the CIIC, mentioned that the report was developed with support from Phase II (2024–2030) of the Global South-South Development Center (GSSDC) Project – a flagship initiative of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), in partnership with CICETE – and is being jointly edited by the five organizing institutions and prepared in collaboration with leading Chinese experts from the CAAS's Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development in Agriculture, the Beijing University of Agriculture, the School of Landscape Architecture at Beijing Forestry University, and other partner institutions.

The report will be published in both Chinese and English and will feature approximately 10 case studies highlighting innovative, technology-driven approaches to strengthening climate resilience and supporting green transformation in rural communities. It argues that China has currently achieved a shift in green and low-carbon development and climate resilience – from fragmentation to coordination, from single-sector approaches to systemic governance, and from passive response to proactive prevention – effectively addressing governance shortcomings, such as a previous emphasis on mitigation over adaptation and on development over security. A crucial undertaking, coordinating the advancement of climate resilience building with green and low-carbon transition is an important pillar for the agricultural and rural sectors in responding to climate change, ensuring food security, and achieving sustainable development.

The event included a panel discussion titled "How Climate Resilience Safeguards the Future of Rural Areas" and another titled "Low-Carbon Transition as a New Engine for Inclusive Rural Growth."

In his closing remarks, Mohamed Abdellahi El Vilaly, ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to China, noted that since the late 1960s, Mauritania has faced severe drought and desertification, with profound consequences for rangelands, agriculture, and rural livelihoods. He emphasized that the transition to a low-carbon economy can serve as a powerful driver of inclusive rural development through the promotion of sustainable agriculture, improved natural resource management, and expanded access to clean energy.

"China-Africa cooperation projects implemented in Mauritania have set a benchmark for green development across Africa, helping to share China's valuable experience and expertise in combating desertification throughout the continent," he said. "The experiences of Mauritania and China in combating desertification and promoting green development demonstrate that genuine cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and expertise can transform environmental challenges into meaningful opportunities for development and prosperity."

Some of the people who attended the Sci-Tech Empowering Rural Transformation: 2026 Climate Resilience and Green Transition Dialogue in person also visited an Ant Forest project site located in Jinta County in order to observe Haloxylon (saxaul)–Cistanche grafting and related desert-based industry development endeavors on the morning of June 5.

Over the past 10 years, Ant Forest has encouraged 700 million people to adopt environmentally friendly lifestyles and has planted more than 600 million trees in ecologically fragile regions that require urgent restoration throughout China using sustained corporate funding. Additionally, it improved 300,000 mu (approx. 20,000 hectares) of saline-alkali land in regions such as Da'an, Jilin Province, turning barren soil into fertile farmland with rice yields exceeding 900 jin per mu (approx. 6,750 kg per hectare). With energy efficiency becoming a growing priority for businesses, the NESCAFÉ Fusion 3 combines performance, efficiency and environmental responsibility in a single solution.

Developed as part of Nestlé's broader sustainability ambitions, the NESCAFÉ Fusion 3 combines energy-efficient performance, responsible materials and lifecycle management – helping businesses serve great coffee with a lower environmental footprint. Backed by Nestlé's global investment in regenerative agriculture and lower-carbon coffee production, Fusion 3 translates farm-level sustainability initiatives into measurable operational impact for businesses in Singapore, supporting them as they advance their sustainability and ESG ambitions.

Sustainability By Design: From Factory to Cup

The NESCAFÉ Fusion 3 is manufactured in factories powered 100% by wind energy, built with up to 30% recycled ABS plastic[1] to support responsible recycling pathways, and engineered to deliver up to 60% energy savings[2] in standby mode compared to previous models.

These product-level commitments are reinforced by NESCAFÉ Plan 2030[3], which works with over 100,000 farmers annually to adopt regenerative agricultural practices that improve soil health, biodiversity and climate resilience. In 2024, 32% of NESCAFÉ green coffee was sourced from farmers implementing regenerative agriculture practices, up from 25% the year before, and more than 200,000 coffee farmers across 16 countries were trained in regenerative agriculture. The Plan's field programs are subject to third‑party monitoring and evaluation by the Rainforest Alliance.

Complementing the machine is NESCAFÉ Superiore, a 100% Arabica premium whole roasted coffee bean sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms in Brazil and Columbia – ensuring that every cup served meets verified standards for environmental, social, and economic sustainability at the farm level.

As Singapore's hospitality sector accelerates its sustainability journey under the Singapore Hotel Sustainability Roadmap, the introduction of NESCAFÉ Fusion 3 and NESCAFÉ Superiore enables operators to improve operational energy efficiency while maintaining high beverage quality, supporting both environmental goals and guest experience expectations.

Two Patented Innovations, One Intelligent Machine

Fusion 3 redefines what a commercial bean-to-cup system can deliver. Two exclusive patents make it category-defining:

Patented New Filter Brew

Using gentle gravity extraction rather than pressure, the Fusion 3 produces a balanced, smooth, and sweet cup with a delightful aroma – a first for the commercial bean-to-cup category. With no tamping on ground coffee and water pressure under 2 bars, Fusion 3 now covers every coffee preference, from filter brew to a clean, longer cup, with no second equipment required.

Patented Perfect Espresso from the First Cup

Through a patented brewing system incorporating a hot water flush and an increase of +6.5°C compared to Fusion 2.0, the Fusion 3 delivers the ideal temperature and perfect crema from the very first espresso of the day – eliminating the warm-up inconsistency that has long been a pain point in commercial settings.

Closing the Loop: Responsible Machine Lifecycle in Singapore

Beyond product innovation, Nestlé Professional Singapore has taken meaningful steps to address sustainability beyond the point of use. Since 2024, Nestlé Professional Singapore has partnered with Metalo International, a leading Singapore-based e-waste management company, to support responsible machine end-of-life management.

Through this partnership, decommissioned machines are responsibly dismantled and sorted, components are tracked to improve traceability, and viable parts are recovered and reused where possible. This initiative supports Singapore's growing focus on e-waste management and circular economy practices – completing a full sustainability loop from manufacturing to end-of-life.

Designed for hotels, restaurants, cafés, corporate workplaces, and institutions, Fusion 3 delivers an unbroken chain of quality and accountability, from the farms where NESCAFÉ's beans are grown, to the cup served to every customer.

"With NESCAFÉ Fusion 3, we are redefining what sustainable coffee innovation looks like for Singapore's foodservice sector.

BEIJING, March 18, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- "We will diversify our food supply by advancing crop farming, forestry, animal husbandry, and fisheries in tandem." "Initiatives will be advanced to invigorate the seed industry, and faster moves will be taken to identify and cultivate ground-breaking seed varieties and promote their use. We will promote the R&D and application of appropriate, advanced agricultural machinery and equipment, and see that agricultural technologies reach the fields and farmers."

This year's Government Work Report has laid out key arrangements for work related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers. Across China's farmlands, new technologies, new crop varieties and new production scenarios are emerging one after another.

Starting today, this page launches a new series, "Fresh Stories from the Fields," focusing on new developments and trends in agriculture — from watermelon breeding to unmanned farms — highlighting the latest achievements and the vibrant vitality taking shape in the countryside.

At the Liguo Shunxin Supermarket in Jiaxiang County, East China's Shandong Province, rows of round, plump watermelons stand out on the shelves. Around noon, customers stream in continuously, with some picking up whole watermelons while others ask store staff to cut them open and sell them by weight.

China is the world's largest producer and consumer of watermelons, with annual output remaining stable at around 60 million tons. According to statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, this accounts for roughly 60 percent of global production.

Following the sweet story behind China's seemingly effortless "watermelon freedom," reporters explored how the fruit is supplied steadily throughout the year.

Strong demand, reliable quality

At the Liguo Shunxin Supermarket, "Mibao" watermelons grown in Southwest China's Yunnan Province sell for more than 4.99 yuan ($0.72) per jin (500 grams). "Even though the price is higher than in summer, sales remain strong," said supermarket manager Zhang Hongtao, pointing to a staff member restocking the display.

Over the past half month, the store has maintained daily watermelon sales of more than 160 jin with weekend sales exceeding 240 jin.

Zhang Hongtao has observed that during the off-season, customers usually buy smaller quantities at a time, but they purchase watermelons frequently and show strong willingness to buy them.

Ms Zhang, who was selecting a watermelon, is one such regular customer. "Watermelons are juicy and sweet without being overwhelming. Both the elderly and children in my family love them," she said with a smile. "It was still cold recently, but sitting at home with the heater on and eating watermelon feels just as refreshing as having a cold drink in summer."

The steady demand during the off-season is not only driven by consumers' taste preferences and emotional appeal, but also by reliable product quality.

To ensure optimal flavor, the supermarket stores watermelons in refrigerated display cabinets, where they can remain in good condition for seven to ten days. "Some customers worry that the watermelons might not be ripe enough during this period, so we also offer a service where they can cut one open to check before purchasing," Zhang Hongtao said.

At the Hushan Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market in Jiaxiang Street, Jiaxiang County, Shandong, 10 tons of watermelons freshly shipped from a production base in South China's Hainan Province were being unloaded.

Li Jianguo, who has been in the watermelon wholesale business for more than a decade, explained that during spring and summer the market mainly sells locally grown varieties such as "Tianwang" and "Jingxin." When temperatures drop, supply relies largely on southern production areas. These varieties typically have thicker rinds for transportation, accumulate sufficient sugar, and maintain stable flavor, Li said.

The strong off-season market is also reflected in price trends.

"Watermelon supply and prices show clear seasonal patterns," said Zhao Junye, a researcher at the Agricultural Information Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).

After October each year, watermelon supply begins to decline and prices gradually rise. In the first quarter, the national average wholesale price generally exceeds 3 yuan per jin. After April, supply increases significantly and prices fall rapidly. By the third quarter, when northern production regions harvest in large volumes, prices usually reach their lowest levels of the year, Zhao said.

Sufficient supply across seasons

Hainan island, with abundant heat and sunlight, is one of China's major winter production bases for fruits and vegetables. At the Beishanyang planting base in Haitang district of Sanya, Hainan Province, the watermelon harvest has already been completed.

"With good varieties and good packaging, sales are also strong," said Zhang Wei, head of the base and deputy general manager of Hainan State Farms Shenquan Group Co, noting that the base grows seedless Qilin watermelons with bright red flesh, crisp texture and rich sweetness, with their sugar content reaching 14 degrees, making them highly popular in the market.

To deliver this cross-season sweetness to consumers far away, careful work goes into packaging at the fields. Workers carefully select watermelons and pack them into specially designed corrugated cartons. Each box holds four watermelons weighing between 10 and 12 jin each, separated by thick cardboard partitions. According to Zhang Wei, watermelons shipped to other regions of China currently only require moderate insulation during transport and do not need cold-chain logistics.

Watermelons grown at the base are mainly supplied to supermarkets in Shandong, Beijing and northeastern China. The market price of about 4 yuan per jin is higher than the previous range of 2.8 to 3.5 yuan per jin in past years. Zhang Wei said the base expanded its planting area to 500 mu (33.33 hectares) last year, with yields of about 5,000 jin per mu. "The melons were already fully booked before they were harvested," he said.

To accommodate watermelons' preference for warmth and sunlight while protecting them from excessive rain, the base has built greenhouses that shield the crops from wind and rain while maintaining stable temperature and heat. Drip irrigation systems and monitoring equipment have also been introduced to create an optimal microclimate for watermelon growth.

So what is the secret behind year-round watermelon supply?

Xu Yong, a researcher at the Beijing Vegetable Research Center of the Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, explained that China's vast territory provides diverse geographical and climatic advantages.

Combined with the development of suitable varieties and the widespread application of technologies such as integrated water and fertilizer management, and green pest control, suitable environments for watermelon growth can be found in different regions across different seasons, according to Xu.

Currently, China's watermelon production is concentrated in five major regions. The Yangtze River Basin and the Huang-Huai-Hai region account for more than 69 percent of total output, while South China, Northwest China and Northeast China play supporting roles.

In terms of year-round supply, South China provides winter production, the Yangtze River Basin and Huang-Huai-Hai region enable early spring harvests, the northwest region extends the harvest season later into the year, and open-field cultivation in the northeast and northwest regions ensures summer and autumn supply.

Molecular breeding yields diverse watermelons

In Yanjiacun village of Yaojia Town, Zhongmu County in Central China's Henan Province, farmer Ma Xiuhong manages 2 mu of greenhouse land. In addition to conventional varieties, she reserves half a mu to grow "rainbow watermelons." These days, she has been busy transplanting newly cultivated seedlings into the soil.

The "rainbow watermelon" she refers to is a new specialty variety developed in recent years by the Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute of the CAAS. When cut open, the melon reveals red and yellow dual-colored flesh arranged like a rainbow. It is also highly sweet, crisp in texture, and rich in beta-carotene.

"This variety was developed by crossing a high-sugar red-flesh watermelon with a crisp yellow-flesh watermelon and selecting superior offspring," explained Zhao Shengjie, an associate researcher at the Zhengzhou institute.

To meet consumers' increasingly personalized preferences, China's watermelon breeding has continuously followed market trends. Xu said watermelon varieties in China are now highly diverse. In terms of maturity, they include early, mid-early and late-maturing types. In size, they range from large and medium to small watermelons. In flesh color, they include red, yellow, orange and multicolored varieties, Xu said.

"Jingmei 2K," a variety bred by Xu's team with an average weight of about 4 jin per fruit, has become China's most widely planted small watermelon variety and better fits current consumer demand.

Behind this diversity lies the "China sweetness" brought by nation's scientific breeding. China's watermelon breeding technology ranks among the world's leading group, with domestic varieties accounting for more than 98 percent of the market. High quality has become the standard in the domestic market.

As early as 2012, Xu's team completed the world's first watermelon genome map, opening the "black box" of watermelon genetics. The research identified multiple genes resistant to diseases such as fusarium wilt, anthracnose and powdery mildew, and also clarified the genetic functions related to fruit sugar content, size and shape.

"In recent years, we have adopted advanced molecular breeding methods," Xu said. "By combining desirable genes through molecular markers, we have greatly improved breeding efficiency, precision and target orientation, shortening the breeding cycle from seven to ten years to just three to four years."

Looking ahead, what direction will watermelon breeding take? Xu explained that production still faces challenges such as increasingly frequent extreme weather and the emergence of new plant diseases. At the same time, consumers are demanding higher standards in both flesh color and fruit quality.

As a result, further exploration of genes for disease resistance, environmental tolerance and superior quality is still needed. This will continue to improve watermelon resilience and quality while expanding the range of varieties. "In particular, high-quality medium and small watermelons with diverse flesh colors are likely to become a highlight of future watermelon varieties," Xu said.

This was compiled from an article originally published on the tenth page of the People's Daily on March 17,2026.

The innovation emerged in response to worsening climate conditions that have caused cocoa crop losses of up to 80–90%, leaving farmers with large quantities of unsellable cocoa waste. At the same time, livestock farmers have faced rising feed costs during prolonged drought.

The research team created two forms of supplement: a compressed "lick block" for small farms and a powdered supplement for larger feed-mixing systems. Both products can incorporate cocoa waste as up to 30% of the ingredient formulation, creating a practical way to reduce agricultural waste while generating additional income for cocoa farmers.

According to the research, compounds naturally found in cocoa—including flavonoids, polyphenols, theobromine, and tannins—provide significant health benefits for livestock. Theobromine was found to improve cattle well-being, reduce inflammation, and enhance feed-to-meat conversion efficiency. In dairy cattle, testing showed that the supplement reduced somatic cell counts associated with mastitis by more than 70% and increased milk fat content by up to 15%.

Results in beef cattle were equally striking. Farmers who previously sold ordinary beef cattle for 20,000–30,000 baht per animal reported improved meat quality after using the supplement, with some cattle reaching premium A3 and A4 grades valued at more than 100,000 baht. Researchers also found that tannins in cocoa help suppress methane-producing bacteria in the rumen, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 44% while redirecting energy toward muscle and fat production, improving marbling and meat quality.

Beyond cattle farming, the research is being expanded into poultry, goats, and shrimp farming, reinforcing the project's guiding principle that "every cocoa bean must have a purpose" and demonstrating how circular economy innovation can create sustainable value across multiple agricultural sectors.

For more information, contact the Faculty of Integrated Agriculture, Chulalongkorn University at Tel. +662 218 1243, or visit www.cusar.chula.ac.th.

Media Contact:
Chula Communication Center
Email: Pataraporn.r@chula.ac.th

Fertiliser prices have leapt following the start of the war in the Middle East, which supplies 45% of the world's traded nitrogen fertilizer, with approximately one third of globally traded fertilisers passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

"The conflict in the Gulf has highlighted the risks to nitrogen fertiliser supply and the very real risks to farmers – and consumers – from price shocks," PlasmaLeap CEO and co-founder Frere Byrne said. "Anecdotally, we're hearing that lack of diesel is affecting planting decisions, while local fertiliser supplies are quickly being exhausted. Our technology removes some of that risk by enabling farmers to produce fertiliser themselves, which has crucial benefits in terms of derisking supply chains, and reducing emissions."

GRDC Managing Director Nigel Hart said technologies that improve fertiliser supply resilience and reduce emissions were strategically important for the Australian grains sector.

"PlasmaLeap's approach to decentralised nitrogen production has the potential to strengthen supply chains while supporting more sustainable farming systems. GRDC is pleased to support the continued development and evaluation of this technology for Australian growers," Mr Hart said.

GrainCorp Strategy and Ventures Manager Zack Atlas said: "At GrainCorp Ventures, we're committed to investing in innovative technologies that deliver value for growers while improving the sustainability and resilience of agricultural supply chains. PlasmaLeap's clean, decentralised fertiliser technology has the potential to help growers of all sizes lower emissions, reduce costs, and drive meaningful decarbonisation efforts."

Anthony Kachenko, General Manager - Production & Sustainability R&D at Hort Innovation, said the investment reflects the role of innovation in strengthening grower resilience and sustainability.

"Access to reliable, affordable fertiliser is critical for horticulture growers, particularly as input costs and supply chain pressures continue to rise," Kachenko said. "Technologies like PlasmaLeap's, which enable on‑farm and localised production using renewable energy, have the potential to improve supply security while also reducing emissions - supporting both productivity and long‑term sustainability outcomes for Australian growers."

This round demonstrates cross-sectorial backing for world-leading technology tackling pressing national agriculture needs, and evidences a growing pool of local industry-aligned capital with tailored-strategic mandates suitable to fund industry growth and transformation.

Proceeds from the raising will be used to progress first-of-a-kind fertiliser hubs in NSW and Tasmania, expand field trials and further develop PlasmaLeap's core technology. Longer term opportunities for the technology beyond fertiliser include sustainable fuels and energy systems.

About PlasmaLeap:

PlasmaLeap designs, manufactures, and distributes the world's most advanced zero-emissions modular chemical reactors for hard-to-abate industries including agriculture, energy, and transport. Our mission is to build accessible, sustainable technology for global fuel and chemical production. Headquartered in Sydney, PlasmaLeap's state-of-the-art chemical plants are disrupting the chemical sector, using only air, water and electricity to create valuable fuels, fertilisers, and industrial chemicals with marked-leading energy performance and production rates.

SHANGHAI, May 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- At five o'clock on a misty morning in Xinchang Town of suburban Shanghai, the fog has yet to lift, and the fish pond's surface shimmers with a clear, silvery light.

There, at the base of an experimental station for aquatic animal germplasm resources of Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), three young women in chest waders and black rubber boots are already hard at work in the ponds. With a gentle sweep of their nets, one brightly colored common carp after another break through the water. Some blaze red like flames, some are as white and smooth as congealed jade, and some are red with black spots.

These beautiful fish, known by their colorful names such as "whole red," "whole white," "white with black patches" and "red with black patches" - all belong to a single species: the Oujiang color common carp. Native to the Oujiang River basin in East China's Zhejiang Province, the Oujiang color common carp has long been widely farmed in the region. Its breeding and improvement have also become the fruit of more than two decades of dedicated research by the College of Fisheries and Life Science of SHOU.

This fish, which combines culinary value with ornamental beauty and embodies the efforts of Chinese scientists, is now drawing young fishery scholars from around the world to China in pursuit of their dreams - a vivid example of China's wisdom in sharing the development of global fisheries.

Among them are these three overseas students of SHOU, who work hard at the base in early mornings: Nusrat Hasan Kanika, a postdoctoral researcher from Bangladesh, Rabia Tahir, a postdoctoral researcher from Pakistan, and Ayesha Arif, a doctoral student, also from Pakistan.

"The first time I noticed the pure beauty of the red-colored fish in 2022, I immediately fell in love with it," Kanika said, crouching by the pond as her eyes follow the flicker of an "whole red" fish in the water. "Maybe it felt special to me as both China and Bangladesh have red on their flags."

A research journey in China

Kanika is from Bangladesh, a country often poetically described as the "land of rivers." She once studied at Jagannath University, which has long-standing academic ties to SHOU. It was this cross-border scholarly connection that eventually brought her to Shanghai.

At SHOU, Kanika mainly focuses on the gut microbiome of fish. She observed that certain lipids, synthesized by bacteria, are enriched in the red variety of the Oujiang color common carp. "So we isolated and applied to increase those bacteria, and the fish actually showed a brighter color, as well as an increase in size," Kanika told the Global Times.

Kanika, along with her fellow researchers, is working on the mechanism from the gut to the final skin color formation of the fish. "It's still under development, but we hope to reveal this connection very soon."

Kanika hopes that her research will make contributions to the development of her home country in the future. "Coming from a developing country, we need some applicable research for healthy aquatic environment and economically beneficial productions. If I work with these beneficial bacteria, I can apply [the knowledge] in my country to make [the fish there] more beautiful, more productive, taller and bigger," she told the Global Times by a pond of the base.

Arif is drawn to the mysteries of heredity. Now pursuing her PhD in aquaculture at SHOU and mainly working on epigenetics, Arif traces her scientific interest back to her earlier years, when she spent hours gazing at fishponds developed through China-Pakistan cooperative projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor framework in her village.

As a child, spending time with the fish, turtles and other aquaculture species in the ponds is what sparked her initial curiosity about aquatic life and heredity. The area also practiced rice-fish culture, where rice cultivation and fish farming were carried out together in the same ecosystem, further deepening her fascination with sustainable aquaculture.

Reflecting on those childhood memories, Arif told the Global Times, "This curiosity eventually brought me to China."

Tahir, also from Pakistan, has turned her attention to environmental stress and gene regulation, exploring how factors like heat and low oxygen can influence how fish grow, look and function. Tahir earned her PhD from Sichuan Agricultural University, and later continued her research at SHOU, attracted by China's advanced aquaculture research platforms.

While in Pakistan, Tahir's mother once suggested that she pursue her research in a leading country, and she chose China. "In terms of research technologies and real-world applications to address global challenges, China is currently at the forefront. That's why I chose to come here," she explained. She hopes this experience will help bridge fundamental research with practical aquaculture applications.

Studying in China has not only enriched Tahir's research journey, but also brought her closer to the country's pragmatic approach to science and its open, inclusive spirit of collaboration.

'It feels like home'

The three international researchers are members of Key Laboratory of Freshwater Aquatic Genetic Resources of SHOU. Founded in 1982, the lab was among the earliest first institutions in China dedicated to the study of aquatic animal germplasm resources, according to SHOU.

Why does fish farming also need scientists? Wang Jun, an expert at the lab and a professor at SHOU's College of Fisheries and Life Science, explained that ordinary fish farmers often do not pay much attention to genetics and selective breeding. As a result, self-breeding can lead to severe inbreeding in subsequent generations, causing growth and other performance to gradually decline.

"What we need to do is to understand the status of germplasm resources, and through genetic evaluation and optimization, keep selecting better traits to create better and genetic stable varieties," Wang told the Global Times.

After decades of steady work, the lab has bred a national-level improved variety of the Oujiang color common carp, Longshen No. 1 Oujiang color common carp, and is now developing Longshen No. 2, which is expected to grow faster and display more stable red coloration, according to Wang.

The lab has also formed a small international "research team" of its own: six postdoctoral researchers and doctoral students from countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh and Egypt. Their main focus is the selective breeding and color genetics in color common carp, with subfields spanning cutting-edge areas such as epigenetics and gut microbiology, Wang said.

This collaboration among international researchers is far more than a one-way process of "learning." In Kanika's view, it is a form of mutual empowerment. She said that in the lab, whenever a new member joins, they teach them how to do the work in the lab and share the work they have done before. As a team, they handle different parts of the lab tasks.

China's open and inclusive research environment has given these young scientists a strong sense of security and confidence. Tahir said that the teachers and experts at SHOU come from all over the world, enabling them to discuss research ideas from various backgrounds. "Different minds can contribute to one scientific problem at the same time. And through collaboration, we can solve global challenges together," Tahir told the Global Times.

For Arif, who was somewhat alone during her early days in China, the country's human warmth that can be felt in everyday details has soon offered a kind of emotional connection that goes beyond the laboratory - a distinctive warmth in the exchange between Chinese and international science and culture.

"It feels like home," she told the Global Times.

A maritime community with shared future

For many overseas students like Kanika, Arif and Tahir, traveling all the way to China to study fish, especially the color genetics of the Oujiang color common carp, goes far beyond the beautiful colors.

The Oujiang color common carp is the centerpiece of the rice-fish system in Qingtian County of Zhejiang, which was the first in China to be recognized in 2005 as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Moreover, according to SHOU, the Longshen No. 1 common carp has been introduced to more than 10 provinces and municipalities across China, covering over 1,333 square kilometers of rice field, and is playing an important role in rural revitalization.

For Kanika, this fish represents an opportunity to upgrade the fisheries industry in her home country.

"We Bangladeshis are called a fish-and-rice people. In China, I saw that Chinese people also love fish and rice for lunch and dinner," Kanika told the Global Times, adding that she is glad to see that China is becoming more globalized, and is inviting people from many other countries to further cooperate in different fields.

China has been actively engaged in global ocean governance, and has worked to build a maritime community with a shared future. In April 2025, China officially signed to join the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's Agreement on Port State Measures, marking a significant step forward in the country's ongoing efforts to combat illegal fishing and protect marine fishery resources, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Looking ahead, Tahir said she plans to continue her research career in China, to become a top fisheries scientist, and to apply what she has learned to real-world aquaculture practice, contributing to the development of global fisheries.

Kanika described her journey in China as "fantastic," a journey, as she put it, filled with "colorful fish, a colorful world and colorful culture." She believes that China's fisheries-related programs are connecting more and more global scientists, fishers and communities, being a vivid example of building a maritime community with a shared future. "No matter where we come from, we share the same responsibility to protect and sustain our oceans," she told the Global Times.

This article first appeared in the Global Times.

Richie, who is part Japanese and involved in Zenova Steel, supports regional expansion through strategic operations, notes, "While premium Japanese fruits are often perceived as luxury products in markets like Singapore, Green Gorilla aims to make them more accessible. Our subscription model offers flexible pricing tiers that cater to gift buyers, the health-conscious, and those seeking everyday indulgence—all while supporting growers."

Quality sourcing drives year-round selections

"Unlike mass-produced fruits, premium Japanese fruits are renowned for their exceptional quality and meticulous cultivation by a small number of farmers using traditional handcrafted techniques. For this reason, we are committed to reducing waste, honouring harvest quality, supporting growers with a steady income, and delivering fruits within three to five days of harvesting," reiterates Mitsuharu.

By utilising Yuya's network of trusted producers, Green Gorilla collaborates exclusively with farmers who practice organic methods based on traditional cultivation practices. They include Minowa Melon Farm, known for producing Shizuoka Crown Melons.

Yuya stresses, "Quality control is essential for premium produce. Every fruit we import undergoes strict quality inspections, both on the farm and before shipping. This ensures that only top-grade produce reaches subscribers. Evaluation criteria include sugar content (Brix level), appearance, colour, shape, and freshness."

Featured fruits on the brand's platform include Crown Melons from Shizuoka Prefecture, renowned for their perfect shape and refreshingly sweet flesh; succulent Sakura Momo strawberries from Tokushima; and Saga strawberries from Kyushu Island, famous for their large size, whiteness, and candy-like sweetness.

In addition, there are Sun Fuji apples from Aomori; sweet and juicy Dekopon oranges from Kumamoto; and Okinawa premium Peach Pineapples (500g to 800g) with red skin, creamy white flesh, and a distinct, fragrant peach-like aroma.

Another seasonal offering are Miyazaki "Egg of the Sun" mangoes, grown in greenhouses for their bright, vibrant red skin, fibre-free texture, and intense sweetness. To prevent bruising and ensure perfect ripeness, growers secure a small net around each fruit.

Seasonality and sustainability offer top-quality fruits

Seasonality and sustainability are, of course, central to Green Gorilla's offerings, adds Yuya. "Selections reflect Japan's harvest calendar year-round, and we visit our partners regularly to estimate supplies. Premium fruit is inherently seasonal, much like fashion collections or seasonal menus."

Limited harvest periods create excitement, explains Richie. For example, Crown Melons are grown using the labour-intensive "One Vine, One Fruit" method, concentrating nutrients and sugars in hand-pollinated, high-grade fruit. Although they are cultivated in specialised glass greenhouses with A/C systems and can be harvested year-round, their peak season for the most fragrant and sweetest quality occurs during the early summer months of May to July.

<img src="https://mma.prnasia.com/media2/2984102/pics__2.jpg?p=medium600" title="(From left) Three subscription plans are offered.
